BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Millsaps College women's basketball team returned to the hardwood on Wednesday afternoon. The Majors traveled to Birmingham-Southern as they opened up the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) portion of their schedule against the Panthers.
Millsaps jumped out to a 31-25 lead at halftime, but BSC reclaimed the lead in the 3rd quarter and held on down the stretch for a 74-65 win.
The loss drops the Majors to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in the SAA. The Panthers improve to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in the league.
How It Happened
Despite falling behind 7-0 early, Millsaps fought back, and with a pair of free throws from
Mikenzi Laster held a 16-14 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.
An 8-0 run to close out the 2nd quarter allowed the Majors to carry a 31-25 advantage to halftime.
The 3rd quarter was back and forth. but the Panthers were able to close the period with a three-pointer to pull ahead 50-47.
Unfortunately the 4th quarter saw the Panthers convert 15-16 opportunities from the free throw line, and outscored the Majors by six points to pull out a 74-65 win.
Notables
Dia Fortenberry led Millsaps with 19 points on 50% shooting from the field.
Taelor Manning added 13 points of her own and a team-high 4 assists.
Megan Donaldson converted 3-7 opportunities from beyond the three-point arc to finish with 9.
Laster led the Majors on the glass with 9 rebounds.
What's Next?
Millsaps will have a few days off for the Christmas holidays before returning to the court on December 29. The Majors will round out non-conference play with a trip to Huntingdon College.
