Softball Sweeps Centenary in Sunday Doubleheader

PINEVILLE, La.—The bats came alive for the Millsaps softball team Sunday, as they pounded out 25 hits and 21 runs en route to a 12-6 and 9-1 sweep of Centenary. The wins move the Majors record to 3-5 on the season.

Game One

Millsaps got the offense going in the top of the first. After Leslie Norris reached on a error to start the game, Kendall Carder moved her to second with a fielder's choice and Lindsey Osbon singled to put runners on the corners with two outs. After Osbon stole second, Jordan Lipari doubled down the left field line to plate both runners.

Centenary was able to get one back in the second off starter Karley Williams but Williams got three quick outs to end any additional threat.

Millsaps extended their lead in the third, plating three to take a 5-1 lead. Carder reached on a dropped third strike, stole second and scored on Karlie Galloway's double to right. Galloway scored on a Lipari RBI and with two outs, Ty Bergeron reached on an error and later scored after back-to-back singles by Mackenzie Johnson and Micah Danos

The Majors tacked on an insurance run in the fourth but Centenary plated three in the fifth off Cassidy Thrash, who relieved Williams in the third. Caitlin Adkins entered with an out in the fourth and gave up an RBI single before inducing an inning-ending double play.

Millsaps busted the game open in the sixth and seventh innings, scoring six runs on RBI's by Johnson and a pair of RBI's from Lipari and Emily Cook. Shauna Blady finished the final two innings, keeping the Ladies off the board and giving the Majors their second win of the season.

Lipari led the way, going 3-5 with five RBI's while Carder had two hits and scored three runs. Galloway finished with three RBI's and Cook had two. Thrash picked up the win on the mound, her first of the year.

Game Two

Millsaps started early in game two, with the first three batters getting on base and scoring on a pair of Ladies errors.

They added five runs in the fourth as they send nine batters to the plate, with RBI's by Cook, Katelyn Norse and Carder, to put Millsaps ahead 8-1.

The big story of the game, along with the Majors offense, was the gem of a game pitched by freshman Amber Funderburk. Her only slip up came in the second, when she allowed a solo home run to the Centenary cleanup hitter. She gave up just the one run on two hits and three walks, striking out five in a complete game that improved her record to 1-1.

Offensively, Norse led the way with a hit and a pair of RBI's. Norris and Carder each had a pair of hits.

What's Next

Millsaps will open their 2019 home slate next weekend with a Sunday doubleheader against Huntingdon College. First pitch is scheduled for 2pm.
