JACKSON, Miss.—The Majors opened their 2019 home campaign Saturday, welcoming in the Hawks of Huntingdon College for a doubleheader.
Huntingdon was able to take both games, 5-2 and 3-2, respectively, as the Majors bats were uncharacteristically quiet across the afternoon.
Game One
Huntingdon got things started in the first inning, jumping on Millsaps starter
Amber Funderburk. After a single, a walk and a pair of stolen bases, a two-out single to right put HC ahead 2-0 followed by an RBI double that gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead after one.
HC added to their lead in the second, once again with two outs as a error, a single and a groundout put runners on second and third. A single brought home both Hawk runners, extending the lead to 5-0.
Lindsey Osbon led off the second with Millsaps' first hit of the game, but was unable to advance past first.
The Majors were able to cut into the Huntingdon lead in the sixth when
Jordan Lipari doubled to start the inning and
Ty Bergeron brought her home with a two-run homerun over the left field fence. It was Bergeron's first collegiate homerun and it brought the game to 5-2.
After the rough first two innings, Funderburk kept the Hawks bats at bay, not giving up a hit and keeping the game at 5-2. She handed the ball to
Cassidy Thrash in the seventh, who sat Huntingdon down in order to give the Majors a final chance to rally, but Millsaps went down in order to end the game. The game one loss sent the Majors to 3-6 on the season.
The Majors were led by Osbon, Lipari and Bergeron, who each had one hit. Bergeron added two RBI's.
Funderburk took the loss, moving her to 1-2.
Game Two
Karley Williams got the ball for game two, pitching a gem despite picking up the loss.
The Hawks got on the board in the first after the leadoff batter reached on an error and later scored on wild pitch.
Kendall Carder doubled with one out in the bottom of the first, but was stranded at second after a pair of flyouts to center.
After Williams struck out the side in the second, Millsaps tied the game when Osbon reached on an error, she was moved to third after back-to-back sacrifice bunts by
Emily Cook and
Katelyn Norse and she scored on a Lipari single to tie the game at one.
Williams notched her fourth straight strikeout to start the third but a single and triple put Huntingdon back on top, 2-1, in the third.
Williams kept the Hawks off the board, working out of multiple jams to keep the Majors deficit at just one. In the bottom of the sixth,
Karlie Galloway doubled with one out and, then with two outs, scored on an Osbon single, to tie the game at two apiece.
In the seventh, Williams got the first out then surrendered a pair of singles. She was replaced by
Caitlin Adkins, who got an out but then gave up a single to right, scoring a run and putting Huntingdon ahead 3-2.
In the final frame, Lipari singled up the middle to start and moved to third on Bergeron's single to center.
Leslie Norris, who was pinch running for Bergeron, advanced to second on a foul out, putting runners at second and third with two outs. But the game ended with the tying run on third as a groundout to the second baseman finished the night for Millsaps.
Lipari led the way, picking up a pair of hits and an RBI. Osbon also had a hit and an RBI for Millsaps.
Williams picked up the loss, moving her to 1-3 on the season. She pitched 6.1 innings and gave up just two earned runs on six hits while striking out 10, a career high.
