Majors Sweep Sewanee in Sunday Doubleheader

JACKSON, Miss.—Before escaping to Florida for spring break, the Majors softball team needed to finish their SAA series with Sewanee in a Sunday doubleheader.

Game one saw the Millsaps bats jump on Sewanee pitching to the tune of 12 runs on 13 hits in a 12-0 five-inning shortened game. Game two was much closer as the Majors played from behind until they tied it in the fifth before Morgan McCrea's walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh scored Kaylee White and secured the 6-5 win for Millsaps. The weekend sweep moves the Majors record to 6-10 overall and 3-3 in the SAA.

Game One

Millsaps jumped on Tigers starter Kendell Goodrum for four runs in the first inning. Jordan Lipari reached second on a Sewanee error to lead off before scoring on a single by Kendall Carder. Carder advanced to third on the play and Karlie Galloway was hit by a pitch, putting runners on the corners. A double steal put Galloway on second and scored Carder, putting Millsaps ahead 2-0. Matilyn Taliaferro doubled, pushing Galloway to third, Katelyn Norse followed that up with a double of her own, plating two and giving Millsaps a 4-0 lead.

The Majors broke the game open in the second with five runs, all with two outs. With Lipari on first, Galloway made it 6-0 when she cranked a pitch over the left field fence for a two-run homerun, her first of the season. Lindsey Osbon, Taliaferro and Norse also scored runs off Sewanee defensive miscues to go ahead 9-0 after two.

Three more runs were added in the fourth when Brooklyn Wascom scored on a Tiger error and Lipairi added a pair of RBI's to put Millsaps ahead 12-0.

Karley Williams, who got the start on the mound for Millsaps, picked up the win, giving up just three hits over three innings while not allowing a run. Shauna Blady and Cassidy Thrash finished the final two innings, not allowing a hit.

Offensively, Millsaps was led by Norse's three hits and two RBI's while Galloway had a pair of hits and a pair of RBI's. Taliaferro also had two hits for the Majors and Lipari added a pair of RBI's.

Game Two

Sewanee got out to a 4-0 lead off Majors starter Caitlin Adkins in the second, using a bases loaded walk and a bases clearing double to take the lead.

Millsaps answered with one in the second after Emily Cook doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third on a single by Taliaferro and scored on a Ty Bergeron double.

Thrash came in to pitch for Millsaps in the third, giving up a run on a single and a double to put Sewanee ahead 5-1.

The Majors started chipping away at the lead in the fourth when Galloway doubled to leadoff the inning and scored on Taliaferro's two-run homerun, her first of the season, to make the score 5-3.

Millsaps tied the game in the fifth doing what they did all weekend, manufacturing runs. White led off with a double and moved to second on Lipari's single. After Lipari stole second to put runners at second and third, McCrea's fielder's choice plated White and put Lipari on third, Galloway followed with an RBI single, making it five apiece.

Amber Funderburk took the mound in the sixth with runners on first and second and no outs. She was able to keep the Tigers off the board in the final two frames setting up the big seventh inning for Millsaps.

White led off with a single and moved to second on Leslie Norris's bunt single. Lipairi sacrificed runners to second setting up McCrea's walkoff single by a diving second baseman.

Galloway, Taliaferro and White each had a pair of hits while McCrea and Taliaferro each drove in a pair of runs.

Funderburk picked up the win, her second of the weekend, pitching the final two innings and giving up just one hit, along with a strikeout.
