Game Recap: Softball |

Majors Split on First Day of Spring Break Doubleheader

CLERMONT, Fla.—While the students of Millsaps College are taking a much needed break from classes and getting a little TLC, the Millsaps softball team headed to Florida for a trip of their own. The Majors are in Clermont this week taking part in The Spring Games, a tournament featuring softball teams from all over the country. Millsaps will play six games across their week in Fla.

To open their week in Florida, Millsaps knocked off Wheaton College 5-4 before falling in the nightcap to Nebraska Wesleyan, 3-1.

Game One

Millsaps got on the board early in game one against Wheaton. Jordan Lipari and Morgan McCrea led off the game with back-to-back singles before Karlie Galloway added an RBI single of her own, to put the Majors ahead 1-0.

Majors starter Cassidy Thrash got out of a first inning jam and got the first two outs of the second inning but that's where things started to unravel for the freshman. She walked four straight to tie the game and load the bases before a two-RBI single ended her day and put Wheaton up 3-1. Reliever Shauna Blady allowed another run to cross on a passed ball but would keep the Thunder from doing any more damage.

Mackenzie Johnson led off the third inning with a single with Lipari singling right behind her. A walk to Galloway loaded the bases but not before Johnson scored on a passed ball and Lipari ended up on second. Emily Cook reached on an error by the shortstop, which allowed Lipari to score and make it 4-3.

Kendall Carder singled in the fourth, stole second and then scored on Ty Bergeron's double to tie the game at four. The Majors took the lead in the top of the sixth when Johnson, who led off with another hit, reached second on a wild pitch and scored on a McCrea hit.

Blady, who kept the Thunder off balance when she came in in the second inning, got a strikeout and a pair of fly outs to end the game and give Millsaps the win, their fourth in a row.

The Majors were led at the plate by Lipari and McCrea, who each had three hits. McCrea, Galloway and Bergeron all had RBI's while Johnson and Lipari each scored a pair of runs.

Blady picked up the win for Millsaps, giving up just two hits and striking out for over 5.1 innings.

Game Two

Game two was a pitcher's duel with starter Karley Williams going toe-to-toe with Nebraska Wesleyan's starter Neliegh Brown.

The Majors got on the board first when Leslie Norris led off the bottom of the third with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, third on a Lipari sacrifice bunt and scored on McCrea's sacrifice fly.

The Prairie Wolves, however, tied things at one in the fourth, then adding the winning run and in an insurance run in the fifth and seventh, respectively.

The Majors best chance to get back in the game came in the bottom of the fifth. After three walks loaded the bases with just one out, the next two Millsaps batters couldn't push a run across. Neb. Wesleyan pitching kept the Majors off the base paths in the final two innings.

Offense was hard to come by as Millsaps had just three hits in the game. Williams, who took the loss, pitched well, giving up just three runs on eight hits across seven innings.
