Game Recap: Softball |

Day Two of The Spring Games Sees Another Major Split

CLERMONT, Fla.—As the week continues, so does the competition for the Majors softball team. On Wednesday they led off with Washington and Jefferson in an early morning game before taking on #2 ranked Illinois Wesleyan to end the afternoon.

The Majors were able to down Washington and Jefferson 5-1 but dropped their afternoon game 2-1.

Game One

Much like yesterday's win over Wheaton, Millsaps got on the board early against W&J. With two outs in the first, singles from Karlie Galloway and Lindsey Osbon put a runner in scoring position, setting up Matilyn Taliaferro's RBI double, giving the Majors a 1-0 lead. Kendall Carder followed with a single of her own, scoring Osbon and putting Millsaps ahead 2-0. Starter Shauna Blady did the rest.

Blady allowed just two baserunners in the second through sixth innings, allowing the Majors to build on their lead in the fifth. RBI's from Jordan Lipari, Taliaferro and Carder pushed the Millsaps lead to 5-0.

The Presidents were able to tack on a run in the bottom of the seventh after a two-out single and double, but Blady got the last batter to pop out for the win.

Taliaferro and Carder had big offensive days for Millsaps, as they each had a pair of hits to go along with a pair of RBI's.

Blady went the distance on the mound giving up just four hits and an earned run over seven innings. She also had five strikeouts.

Game Two

Freshman Amber Funderburk got the start in game two, tasked with trying to shut down the number two team in the country in Illinois Wesleyan. She allowed baserunners in each of the first two innings but shut the door on any runs, keeping the score knotted at 0 through the first two frames.

In the top half of the third, Ty Bergeron led off with a double but wasn't able to score as the Titans pitcher was also in a groove. In the bottom of the third, IWU was able to scratch a run across after the leadoff hitter bunt singled, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and eventually scored on another single.

Millsaps tied the game in the fifth when Mackenzie Johnson's sacrifice fly plated Carder, who reached on a single to start the inning.

The tie was short lived as the Titans led off their half of the fifth with a triple that came around to score by stealing home.

Unfortunately for the Majors, that one run lead was all IWU would need as Ally Wiegand came in and finished the game, striking out the final five batters.

Funderburk pitched a lights out game for Millsaps, giving up just the two runs on five hits.

What's Next

After a day off on Thursday, Millsaps will wrap up their time in Florida with a final doubleheader on Friday. They'll square off with Juniata College at 2:45 Friday afternoon before finishing with Hope College at 5:15.
