CLERMONT, Fla.—As the Millsaps softball team prepares to start classes on Monday, they had some business to take care of first. They needed to wrap up their time at The Spring Games with games against Juniata College and Hope College.
Millsaps took game one from Juniata 3-2 before falling to Hope College 6-4 in the nightcap.
Game One
Juniata got out to an early 1-0 lead off Millsaps starter
Karley Williams. A walk and a double put a runner at third, who later came into score on an RBI groundout. But Williams was able to work out of the jam, keeping the lead at one.
The lead, however, was short lived as
Lindsey Osbon led off the top of the second with a double and
Emily Cook walked, advancing to second on a wild pitch.
Ty Bergeron then singled, scoring Osbon and Cook and putting Millsaps ahead 2-1.
Williams worked out of another jam in the second but couldn't get out of the third unscathed, as Juniata used a walk and an RBI double to knot the game at two apiece.
Both teams left runners in scoring position in the fourth but Millsaps took the lead for good in the fifth, capitalizing off an Eagle error.
Morgan McCrea tripled to lead off the frame and scored on the next batter when
Kendall Carder reached on an error.
Juniata once again put runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth but Williams shut the door on them both times, preserving the Majors lead.
Millsaps wasn't able to extend their lead in the seventh, setting up for an exciting finish.
Caitlin Adkins replaced Williams on the mound in the bottom of the seventh, but her day would be short lived. An Eagle walk and a pair of singles sandwiched a strikeout, loading the bases and ending Adkins outing.
Shauna Blady came in and got a pop out and a groundout, to pick up her second save of the season and sending Millsaps to a 3-2 win.
Offensively, the Majors were led by Bergeron's hit and two RBI's.
Williams had a big game on the mound, getting timely outs when she needed it and keep Millsaps ahead. She went 6.0 innings, giving up two earned runs on eight hits while striking out four. The win moves her to 3-4 on the season.
Game Two
It looked as though Hope College was going to put this one away early, putting six runs on the board in the first four innings to lead 6-0 and keeping Millsaps to just three hits through five.
In the sixth, however, Millsaps started their rally. Three straight walks loaded the bases and chased Hope pitcher Shelby Steele. Starter Chloe Haskins re-entered the game and was able to get an out but then
Karlie Galloway singled in a run followed by a
Brooklyn Wascom double, plating two more runs.
Katelyn Norse came through with a single, plating a fourth run and cutting into the Flying Dutch lead. But Haskins settled down and was able to get the final two outs of the inning and cut down the Majors rally.
Blady kept Hope off the board in the seventh, but Millsaps wasn't able to drive anyone across in the bottom of the seventh.
Wascom led the Majors offensively, plating a pair with a hit.
Amber Funderburk picked up the loss, giving up three earned runs with six hits while walking four.
