JACKSON, Miss.—After a week in Florida taking on teams from around the country, the Millsaps softball team was back in Jackson Tuesday night to face off with a familiar face. The Majors welcomed in their cross-the-street rivals Belhaven for a midweek doubleheader.
The Blazers took game one 8-2 behind a five-run sixth inning before knocking off the Majors 10-7 in nine innings in game two.
Game One
The Blazers jumped on Millsaps starter
Shauna Blady early in game one, putting a one-spot up in the first, third and fourth innings.
In the second and third, the Majors were able to put runners in scoring position but couldn't push anything across.
After both teams went down in order in the fifth, Belhaven broke the game open in the sixth. With two outs, a runner on second and one run already across, Majors reliever
Karley Williams had the same luck as Blady. Three singles and an error allowed Belhaven to add four more runs in the frame and take an 8-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Majors bats started to come alive. With two outs and
Morgan McCrea on first,
Ty Bergeron singled, putting runners at first and second.
Matilyn Taliaferro then came up with a pinch hit double, plating the two runners and cutting into the Blazers lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Majors were able to load the bases after a
Katelyn Norse fielder's choice, a
Brooklyn Wascom single and a
Leslie Norris walk loaded the bases but the runners were stranded after a game-ending groundout.
Taliaferro led the way offensively, picking up a hit and two RBI's. Blady was handed the loss, taking her to 2-5 on the season.
Game Two
This time is was the Majors who pulled out to an early lead. Wascom led off the second inning with a single and moved to third on a throwing error by the Blazer catcher. After a strikeout, back-to-back doubles from
Mackenzie Johnson and McCrea put Millsaps ahead 2-0.
Amber Funderburk kept Belhaven off the board until the top of the fourth when a solo homerun made it 2-1, Millsaps.
Belhaven was able to chip away and eventually take the lead, adding a run in the fifth and sixth innings.
In the Majors half of the sixth, back-to-back singles from Wascom and
Kaylee White set up Norse's double, which scored the pair and put Millsaps ahead 4-3.
Funderburk was able to get two outs in the seventh, but two singles and a double gave Belhaven the lead back, 5-4.
Norris led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and scored on Bergeron's RBI double, tying things at 5. Millsaps was able to load the bases, but a pop up to the pitcher sent the game into extras.
Belhaven started the eighth with a runner on second and pushed her across on a sacrifice and a fielding error.
In the Majors half of the eighth,
Lindsey Osbon started at second, moved to third on a sac bunt and came home on McCrea's triple. Once again, the Majors were able to load the bases, this time with just one out, but couldn't make anything happen.
In the top of the ninth, a pair of singles coupled with a pair of errors led to four Blazer runs, putting them in front 10-6. Millsaps was able to add a run, but couldn't complete the comeback as they fell 10-7.
McCrea and Wascom each had three hits for Millsaps while McCrea and Norse each had a pair of RBI's. Funderburk picked up the loss on the mound after pitching all nine innings.
