JACKSON, Miss.—The Millsaps got back into their SAA softball slate on Saturday as they went head-to-head with the visiting Lynx of Rhodes College in a conference doubleheader.
In game one, the Majors used eight hits and a two-hit shutout from
Amber Funderburk to take down Rhodes, 8-0, in five innings. Game two was a different story, however, as the Majors had five hits but couldn't string anything together in a 2-0 loss.
Game One
Millsaps came out swinging in game one, jumping on top of Rhodes after the first. With one out,
Emily Cook singled up the middle and
Jordan Lipari moved her to second with a single of her own. After a pop up gave Rhodes two outs, back-to-back hits from
Ty Bergeron and
Leslie Norris plated a pair to make it 2-0.
Brooklyn Wascom followed it up with a fielder's choice, which allowed Bergeron to score and give Millsaps a 3-0 lead after one.
Funderburk pitched a gem, keeping Rhodes off the board and allowing Millsaps to extend their lead in the third. After a walk, a hit by pitch and a single loaded the bases,
Kendall Carder came up with two outs and belted a line drive over the center fielder's head, plating all three runs and putting Carder on third. She scored on a wild pitch on the next pitch to give Millsaps a 7-0 lead.
Mackenzie Johnson doubled to left field and came around to score on
Morgan McCrea's single, to put Millsaps on top 8-0 through three innings.
Funderburk set the Lynx down in order in the fourth and fifth, preserving the mercy rule win. She picked up the win, giving up just two hits and striking out six.
Offensively, the Majors were led by Carder's hit and three RBI's. Norris had a pair of hits and also drove in a run.
Game Two
Millsaps wasn't able to find any offense in game two, struggling to find any rhythm against Rhodes starter Lauren King.
The two teams traded zeroes through the first two innings, but Rhodes struck for a run in the top of the third off Majors starter
Karley Williams. They were able to add an insurance run off
Caitlin Adkins in the sixth, pushing the score to 2-0.
In the Majors final at-bat, Galloway and
Matilyn Taliaferro each had hits to bring the winning run to the plate, but King got a groundout to end the game, keeping the Millsaps offense in check to the tune of just five hits.
Williams picked up the loss despite giving up just a run on three hits over four innings. She also had three strikeouts. Galloway had a pair of hits for Millsaps.
