Softball Pulls Ahead Early but Can’t Hold on Late in Loss to Rhodes

JACKSON, Miss.—The Majors did everything they needed to in the first three innings of Sunday's rubber match against Rhodes.

The offense had plated six runs and starter Amber Funderburk had only given up one hit, giving Millsaps a 6-0 lead. But like in any sport, leads can be erased in the blink of an eye. That's what happened Sunday as Rhodes plated 11 runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take the final game of the series 11-8.

How It Happened

For the first three innings, it looked like Sunday's game was going the way of Saturday's first game, with Millsaps jumping ahead early.

After Funderburk worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the first, Millsaps jumped on Lynx ace Lauren King for three runs. Jordan Lipari singled with one out, then after a pop up gave Rhodes two outs, Karlie Galloway doubled to left center, scoring Lipari. Ty Bergeron followed with her second homerun of the season, a blast over the left field fence, giving Millsaps a 3-0 lead.

The Majors added to their lead in the third as the middle part of the order came through again. Lipari led off with a single, moved to second on a sac bunt and third on a wild pitch. She came home on Bergeron's RBI single, putting Millsaps ahead 4-0. Leslie Norris then tripled to right center, scoring Bergeron, and then scored on Lindsey Osbon's single, putting the Majors ahead 6-0.

The first five batters of the fourth reached for Rhodes, which cut the lead to 6-4 and brought Shauna Blady to the mound. A single brought home a fifth run and a double almost tied the game but the Rhodes runner was tagged out at home trying to score on the play.

Karley Williams took over in the fifth with Millsaps clinging to a 6-5 lead. A one-out single, followed by a double, tied the game before a HBP and a passed ball put runners on second and third with just one out. After a strikeout, back-to-back doubles plated three more runs, ending Williams' day and bringing Cassidy Thrash to the mound. Thrash gave up a single but induced a groundball to get out of the inning with Rhodes ahead 9-6.

A walk and an error in the sixth brought Funderburk back to the mound where a double plated two more, pushing the Lynx lead to 11-6.

Millsaps was able to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the sixth with two outs when Morgan McCrea doubled, Lipari walked and Matilyn Taliaferro plated both with a double, bringing the score to 11-8, Rhodes.

Funderburk kept the Lynx off the board in the seventh, but all the Majors could muster in the bottom of the frame was a runner reaching first on an error.

The loss sends Millsaps to 10-17 overall and 4-5 in the SAA.

Williams picked up the loss, moving her to 3-6 on the season. She gave up four runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Bergeron's 3-4 day at the plate with a homerun, three RBI's and two runs led the way for Millsaps. Lipari had a pair of hits and scored three times while Taliaferro had a pair of RBI's.

What's Next

Millsaps will hit the road and head to Kentucky next weekend for their next SAA series, where they'll square off against Centre. The Majors and Colonels will play a doubleheader Saturday and finish the series on Sunday. First pitch Saturday is scheduled for 11 AM CT.
