DANVILLE, Ky.—After wrapping up their home SAA slate last weekend, the Millsaps softball team headed to Kentucky for a Sunday/Monday series with Centre.
Nothing seemed to go right for the Majors in game one as the Colonels picked up the 14-4 five-inning win. In game two, Millsaps was able to put the tying and winning run in scoring position in the seventh but couldn't push them across as Centre took game two 5-4.
Game One
While the Majors were able to load the bases with only one out in the first, they couldn't take advantage and didn't put anything on the scoreboard.
Centre jumped on Millsaps starter
Amber Funderburk in the first, who was only able to record one out before being relieved by
Caitlin Adkins. Funderburk gave up seven earned runs on four hits and three walks as the Colonels pulled ahead 8-0 after one.
The Majors cut into the lead in the second when
Mackenzie Johnson singled in a pair of runs and
Morgan McCrea followed that up with an RBI single to make the score 8-3. Millsaps added another in the third on a McCrea single that plated
Ty Bergeron.
Centre broke the game open in the bottom of the third, plating five and taking a 13-4 lead. A Colonel homerun in the fourth off
Karley Williams made it 14-4 and Millsaps couldn't score in the top of the fifth to stave off the mercy rule.
Funderburk picked up the loss, moving her to 4-7 on the season.
Offensively, the Majors were led by McCrea,
Jordan Lipari and
Kendall Carder who had two hits apiece. McCrea and Johnson also drove in a pair of runs.
Game Two
This time it was Millsaps that got the scoring started, plating a pair in the first. A single and a double from Lipari and Carder put runners on second and third. Bergeron belted a double, plating both and picking up a pair of RBI's while giving the Majors a 2-0 lead.
Centre answered with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning off starter
Shauna Blady.
The Colonels scratched out a two-out run in the second to take a 3-2 lead and extended that lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the third.
Emily Cook's RBI in the fifth and McCrea's RBI in the sixth cut into the Colonels lead, giving the Majors a chance at a comeback in the final frame. Back-to-back singles from Bergeron and
Leslie Norris, followed by a groundout, put runners on second and third but they would stay there as the game ended on a groundout.
Blady's loss moves her to 2-6 on the season. She gave up all five runs, four of them earned, on seven hits while striking out four.
McCrea was three for four with an RBI and Bergeron had a pair of hits with a pair of RBI's.
