JACKSON, Miss.—The Majors needed a game just like the one they played on Saturday.
An offense that erupts for double-digit hits? Check. A pitching staff that gives up three earned runs or less? Check.
A formula like that is definitely enough to get in the win column as the Majors picked up their first SAA win of 2019 with an 8-3 win over Sewanee Saturday night. The win moves Millsaps to 4-10 overall and 1-3 in the SAA.
How It Happened
The Majors picked up a 1-0 lead in the second after
Lindsey Osbon singled and then scored on an RBI double to the center field wall by
Katelyn Norse.
Millsaps added to their lead in the third when
Kendall Carder singled with one out. She advanced to second on a Tiger error, took third on wild pitch and scored on
Karlie Galloway's double.
Emily Cook singled, sending Galloway to third and then took second herself on a stolen base.
Ty Bergeron followed with a single, plating Galloway and putting Cook at third.
Mackenzie Johnson added another single, plating Cook and giving the Majors a 4-0 lead.
Sewanee got to Majors starting pitcher
Amber Funderburk in the fourth, taking advantage of a walk, a single and two doubles to pull within one at 4-3 before Funderburk settled down and got three straight outs.
In their half of the fourth, the Majors broke the game open as
Jordan Lipari led off with a walk, moved to second when Carder reached on an error and scored, as well as Carder, when Galloway came through with her second double of the game, putting Millsaps ahead 6-3. Cook singled and took second on an error, sending Galloway to third with no outs. A pair of groundouts looked like Sewanee could escape a bigger inning but Osbon came through with another hit, driving in a pair of runs and extending the lead.
Shauna Blady took over in the fifth and kept the Tigers off the scoreboard, facing just one batter over the minimum across three innings.
Offensively, Millsaps was led by Galloway's two doubles, three RBI's and two runs. Osbon had two hits and two RBI's while Cook and Johnson each had a pair of hits and an RBI.
Funderburk picked up her second win of the season, giving up just three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out five. Blady picked up the save, her first of the season, giving up just a single with three strikeouts.
Stat of the Game
-Millsaps had at least one baserunner in all their innings at the plate while they kept the Tigers off the basepaths in four of seven innings.
