Baseball Splits Doubleheader at No. 20 LaGrange

LAGRANGE, Ga. -- On Wednesday, the Millsaps College baseball team traveled to Georgia for a midweek doubleheader with LaGrange College. The Panthers came into the week ranked as the No. 20 team nationally in the most recent D3Baseball.com NCAA Division III poll.

LaGrange scored five runs on seven hits in the first game to pick up a 5-0 win. In the second game of the afternoon the Majors responded with a 7-5 win.

With the doubleheader split the Millsaps record now stands at 6-22 on the year. The Panthers move to 22-8 overall.

Game 1
LaGrange opened up the first game with an unearned run in the bottom of the 1st inning. They added a run in the 4th, and plated a pair in the bottom of the 5th to take a 4-0 lead.

An insurance run in the 7th made it 5-0, and proved to be too much for the Majors to overcome.

The offense had five hits, including three from Jimmy Johnstone, but the three defensive miscues helped the Panthers pick up a 5-0 win.

Game 2
LaGrange picked up right where they left off in the second game as they opened up the scoring with two runs in the bottom 1st.

Millsaps answered back in a big way however as a two-out rally in the top of the 2nd inning put five runs on the scoreboard for the Majors.

Mason Little opened things up with a single. He stole second to move into scoring position. A Keaton Page walk put a pair of runners on, and Will Neely came through with a RBI single to score Little. Alan Merkle drew a walk to load the bases and set the stage for a big inning. Johnstone was up next and hit a ball to centerfield for a bases clearing double. The scoring was not done there as Brennan Ducote singled to bring home Johnstone.

All told, the Majors scored five runs on four hits in the inning to take a 5-2 lead.

Two innings later Millsaps added a pair of insurance runs on a two-RBI single from Chris Hart to move ahead 7-2.

That advantage was all that the pitching staff would need to secure the win. Ryan Erwin pitched five strong innings in middle relief to pick up his second win of the season.

The Panthers made things interesting in the bottom of the 7th scoring three runs, but Jackson Russo entered from the bullpen to record the final two outs of the ballgame for his first career save.

What's Next?
The Majors will be on the road again this weekend when they get back into Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play with a three-game series at Berry.
