MOUNT BERRY, Ga.—The tough road slate continued for the Millsaps softball team as they traveled to perennial powerhouse Berry College for a pair of SAA games.
The Majors dropped game one 4-3 before falling in game two, 6-5, as Berry used three runs in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off win.
Game One
Offense was hard to come by for both teams in game one, as the Majors had just three hits and Berry had only four.
The Vikings got on the board first in game one, using a pair of singles and a pair of Millsaps errors to take a 1-0 lead off Majors starter
Shauna Blady.
Millsaps answered with a run of their own in the second after
Ty Bergeron and
Brooklyn Wascom drew back-to-back walks to start the inning.
Lindsey Osbon sacrificed the runners to second and third and
Leslie Norris plated Bergeron, knotting the game at one.
Wascom got things started again the fourth, drawing a walk and advancing to second on Osbon's second sac bunt. Wascom took third on a passed ball and scored when
Kendall Carder reached on a Berry error, putting the Majors ahead 2-1.
Berry took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth, using a three-run homerun with two outs to take a 4-2 lead.
Mackenzie Johnson had an RBI in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to one run but the Majors went down in order in the seventh, dropping the game 4-3.
Blady's loss moves her to 2-7 on the season but despite getting the loss, she pitched well, giving up just four hits and one earned run over six innings.
Game Two
Berry scratched out a run on a throwing error in the second of game two and added a pair more in the third off two singles and an error, to take a 3-0 lead on Majors starting pitcher
Amber Funderburk.
Millsaps cut into the lead in the third after
Morgan McCrea singled, was sacrificed to second and scored on Carder RBI single.
Cassidy Thrash took over for Funderburk in the fourth and kept the Vikings off the board in the fourth, fifth and sixth, allowing Millsaps to take a lead. McCrea led off the sixth with a double, moved to third on a single by
Matilyn Taliaferro before Carder walked to load the bases. A Johnson sac fly brought in McCrea, which was followed up by a
Jordan Lipari single, plating a pair and giving the Majors a 4-3 lead. They added an insurance run in the seventh when Taliaferro doubled in Osbon, putting Millsaps ahead 5-3.
Unfortunately, the lead wouldn't stay as the Vikings plated three runs, all with two outs, to come from behind and walk-off against the Majors, 6-5.
Thrash was handed the loss, moving her to 1-1 on the year, after giving up three earned runs on six hits in 3.2 innings.
Offensively, Millsaps was led by McCrea, Taliaferro and Carder, who all had multiple hits. Taliaferro also had an RBI and a run scored.
