Women's Basketball Outlasts Sewanee for First SAA Win

JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College women's basketball team scored their first Southern Athletic Association (SAA) win of the season on Friday night.

The Majors welcomed the Tigers of Sewanee to the Hangar Dome, and outlasted several comeback attempts in a 52-47 win.

The victory pushes Millsaps to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in the SAA. Sewanee falls to 5-7 overall and 1-1 in the league.

How It Happened
The first highlight of the night came less than three minutes in when Megan Donaldson connected on a three-pointer to put Millsaps up 5-2. That basket was the 178th made three-pointer during her career, making her the new record holder at the college.

That three-pointer also gave the Majors their first lead of the afternoon. Millsaps never trailed again.

Back to back steals and fastbreak layups from Taelor Manning put the Majors up 9-4 midway through the quarter, and the lead stood at 12-8 after the first ten minutes of play.

Millsaps led by as many as seven points in quarter number two, before settling for a 28-22 advantage at halftime.

The Tigers got to within a possession early on in the third quarter, but in the final seconds Dia Fortenberry made a steal and converted on the offensive end to make it 43-33 heading into the final period.

Sewanee fought back to outscore Millsaps in the fourth quarter, but the Majors defense was able to get the needed stops down the stretch to hold on for the 52-47 win.

Notables
Fortenberry led all scorers with 23 points on 7-10 shooting from the field. She also pulled down 10 rebounds to finish with her third double-double of the season.

Manning added 13 points, and Anna Wilson poured in 11 for the Majors.

Defensively, 15 Tiger turnovers led to 19 points for Millsaps on the other end.
