Baseball Tops Lynchburg in Saturday's Doubleheader

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- On Saturday, the Millsaps College baseball team played a pair of games in the Huntingdon College Five Points Deli Tournament.

The Majors opened up play with a 9-6 win over the University of Lynchburg before falling to Emory University 18-1 in the second game of the day.

With today's split, Millsaps now stands at 2-3 overall on the season.

Game 1 vs Lynchburg
The Majors scored early and often, and were able to hold off a late rally by the Hornets to secure the 9-6 win.

Jon Dale Dieckman opened up the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the top of the 1st inning to put Millsaps ahead 1-0. Sam Pitre, who had reached on a leadoff walk, came in to score on the play.

Momentum really shifted the Majors way in the top of the 2nd, as they scored 4 runs on 5 hits to move ahead 5-0.

Avery Brock got the inning started with a leadoff single. He scored on a Jackson Hailey RBI single. With Hailey and Pitre on base, Jimmy Johnstone tripled to left center clearing the bases to put Millsaps up 4-0. Johnstone scored on a Dieckman single to make it 5-0 in favor of the Majors.

Millsaps was not done there however. After Wil Wood pitched a three-up, three-down bottom of the 2nd inning that included a pair of strikeouts, the offense went right back to work in the 3rd.

Again it was Brock who set the table with a leadoff single. This time he scored when the Hornets made an error on a ball put in play by Dylan McFarland. With 2 outs in the inning, Johnstone singled through the left side allowing both McFarland and Chris Hart to score to put the Majors up 8-0.

Lynchburg cut the deficit to 8-4 in a 5th inning that saw them score 4 runs on 3 hits and 1 Millsaps error.

The Majors got that run back in the 6th however when McFarland singled to bring home Hart.

The Hornets hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the 8th, but Ryan Erwin retired the next three batters in order to end the rally. He worked around a base hit in the 9th, striking out the side to secure the 9-6 win for Millsaps.

Key Contributors
Johnstone, Hart, Fritz Walker III, Brock, Hailey and McFarland all had a multi-hit game for the Majors. Johnstone led the way with 4 RBIs, and finished just a home run short of the cycle.

Erwin pitched the final 4.2 innings on the mound to earn his first win of the season. He struck out 6 batters, and allowed just the 2 earned runs.

Game 2 vs Emory
The Eagles scored the game's first 16 runs.

Millsaps got on the board in the bottom of the 5th when Will Neely scored on an error.

Unfortunately, Emory scored 2 more runs in the 7th, and kept the Majors off the scoreboard in the bottom half to capture the 18-1 win in 7 innings.

Key Contributors
Johnstone went 2-3 at the plate, recording base hits in both the 1st and 6th innings. McFarland had a double, while Bailey Watkins had a stolen base for Millsaps.

On the mound, Walker Castle pitched a scoreless top of the 6th inning, working around a leadoff single and striking out 1 batter.
