SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Millsaps College softball team opened up this weekend's trip through the Lone Star State by splitting a doubleheader with the Trinity University Tigers on Saturday.
In the first game, Trinity scored a run in the bottom of the 7th inning to walk-off the Majors 4-3. Millsaps responded in the second game scoring all 4 of their runs in the 6th inning to grab a 4-1 win.
The Majors are now 3-1 overall on the year, and sit alone atop the SAA standings at this early juncture of the season.
Game 1
After a scoreless 1st inning on both sides, the Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning.
The first Millsaps run came in the top of the 3rd.
Leslie Norris reached on an error, and came around to score on a single by
Katelyn Norse.
The Majors tied the game in the top of the 5th when
Emily Cook singled, scoring
Mattie Taliaferro who led off the inning with a double.
After
Hayleigh Rogers worked around a pair of hits in the bottom of inning to keep Trinity off the scoreboard, the offense went right back to work in the 6th.
With one out,
Lindsey Osbon launched her first homerun of the season to put Millsaps ahead 3-2.
Unfortunately, the Tigers got that run back in the bottom of the 6th, and then got a RBI double in the bottom of the 7th to grab the 4-3 walk-off win.
Key Contributors
Ty Bergeron and Taliaferro each had multiple hits for the Majors, while Norris had a stolen base.
Amber Funderburk got the start in the circle, going 3.1 innings, scattering 5 hits and allowing just 1 earned run.
Game 2
The second game was a pitcher's duel early on, as both teams were kept off the scoreboard for the first 4 innings.
Millsaps broke through first in the top of the 5th inning, scoring 4 runs on 5 hits to take a 4-0 lead.
Bergeron set the table by leading off the inning with a single.
Cameron Trussell pinch ran and immediately stole second base. Osbon singled to right field allowing Trussell to come around and score the game's first run.
Kendall Carder doubled to bring home Osbon, and Taliaferro followed that up with a single to score Carder. Taliaferro advanced to third after a walk and a Norris single. She was then brought home on a sacrifice fly by
Katelyn Norse.
Hannah Derouen pitched a shutdown inning in the bottom of the 5th, and Rogers closed out the final 1.2 innings in the circle to pick up the save.
Key Contributors
Norris had a multi-hit game, while Carder and
Gia Zeringue had extra-base hits for Millsaps.
Karley Williams got the start at pitcher, and threw 3.1 innings of shutout softball. She allowed just 1 hit.
What's Next
Millsaps wraps up their Texas trip tomorrow with a doubleheader against Our Lady of the Lake University. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
