Softball Closes out Millsaps Invitational on a Three-Game Win Streak

JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College softball team wrapped up their own Millsaps Invitational over the weekend with three wins in a row.

On Saturday the Majors beat LaGrange College 5-4 in extra innings. Millsaps then turned around and avenged an earlier loss to the University of Dallas, this time topping the Crusaders 8-5.

On Sunday afternoon the Majors took down Austin College by a final score of 7-2.

The three straight wins now have Millsaps at 6-4 overall on the season.

Game 1 vs LaGrange College
Gia Zeringue opened up the scoring for the Majors with a single to center field that brought home both Jordan Lipari and Leslie Norris to make it 2-0 in favor of Millsaps.

The Panthers answered with one run in the 4th, and three runs in the 5th to move ahead 4-2.

The Majors responded in a big way however.

Lipari reached to lead off the inning, and immediately stole second base. One batter later, Ty Bergeron walked to put a pair of runners on base. After a groundout put both runners in scoring position, Katelyn Norse came through with a two-out, two-run single to tie the game at 4-4.

Extra innings were needed, and the Majors picked up the walk-off win when Zeringue came home to score on a ball that was put in play by Karlie Galloway

Hannah Derouen worked a complete game in the circle, allowing just one earned run, striking out five batters and scattering six hits.

Game 2 vs University of Dallas
In Saturday's nightcap, Millsaps used a big 5th inning to avenge a Friday night loss to U Dallas and take down the Crusaders 8-5.

Dallas pushed one run across in the 1st, and added another to their lead in the top of the 3rd.

The Majors fought back to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. Lipari doubled to bring home Norris, who had reached on a leadoff walk. Bergeron followed that up with a single to score Lipari and tie the game at 2-2.

In the 4th, the Crusaders answered right back with two more runs of their own, but Millsaps took the lead for good in the bottom of the 5th.

Lipari and Lindsey Osbon both singled to lead off the inning. Lipari came around to score on a Dallas error, and a double by Norse brought in both Osbon and Zeringue to put the Majors up 5-4. Galloway's two-out single plated Zeringue to push the lead out to 6-4.

Dallas cut it to 6-5 in their half of the 6th inning, but a pair of late insurance runs secured the win for Millsaps.

Osbon and Zeringue each had RBI singles in the bottom of the 6th to put the Majors ahead 8-5, and Amber Funderburk retired the side in the top of the 7th polish off her complete game and finish the win for Millsaps.

Funderburk's final line included a seaon-high seven strikeouts.

Game 3 vs Austin College
It was all Millsaps early on during Sunday's win over the 'Roos.

After Norris drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the 1st, Bergeron came through with a two-out RBI double to put the Majors up 1-0.

Norse led off the 2nd inning with a single. After she advanced to second base on passed ball, Emily Cook's single made it 2-0.

The lead grew to 4-0 in the 4th inning after a Kendall Carder RBI double and Norris RBI single.

The offensive fireworks continued in the 5th inning as Bergeron and Norse both left the ballpark for home runs, making it 7-1 Millsaps after five innings of play.

Austin College plated a run in the top of the 6th, but Derouen ended all hopes of a comeback by retiring the side in order in the top of the 7th to finish off her second complete-game of the weekend.

She finished with seven strikeouts, and allowed just one earned run to move her record to 3-0 on the year.
