JACKSON, Miss. -- On Saturday, the Millsaps College baseball team rebounded from Friday night's season-opening loss by splitting a doubleheader with the LeTourneau University Yellowjackets.
The Majors opened up the afternoon with a 4-2 win in game one, before falling to LeTourneau 6-0 in game two.
Game 1
Freshman
Wil Wood got the start on the mound, and recorded the first two strikeouts of his collegiate career in the bottom of the 1st to help keep the Yellowjackets off the scoreboard.
Jimmy Johnstone opened up the bottom half of the inning with a double, and one batter later
Fritz Walker III brought him home on a double to notch the first RBI of his collegiate career. Later in the inning
Avery Brock singled to center field allowing Walker to score to give Millsaps a 2-0 lead.
Wood really settled in at that point. His final line included 4.1 innings pitched. He allowed just one earned run and struck out five batters.
Clinging to a 2-1 advantage the Majors' offense went back to work in the bottom of the 4th.
Brock and
Mark Petkovsek hit back-to-back singles to open up the inning. Brock scored on a perfect squeeze bunt by
Bailey Watkins, and Petkovsek was brought home on an
Alan Merkle sacrifice fly.
Ryan Erwin relived Wood in the top of the 5th. He pitched the final 2.2 innings of the 7 inning contest, allowing just one hit to pick up the save.
Key Contributors
Walker, Brock, Petkovsek and Watkins each had a pair of hits for the Majors.
Game 2
LeTourneau scored a single run in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd innings of the second to grab an early lead. They added a pair of runs in the 7th, and tacked on an insurance run in the 9th for a 6-0 win.
The Millsaps offense scattered three hits in the game.
Key Contributors
In the top of the 2nd inning
Taylor Sullivan entered from the bullpen with runners on 2nd and 3rd base and nobody out in the inning. He forced a line out and back-to-back ground outs to silence the Yellowjackets' rally.
All told, he pitched 6.0 innings scattering 7 hits and allowing just 3 earned runs.
