JACKSON, Miss. — The 2020 Millsaps College softball season got underway on Saturday afternoon. The Majors welcomed the Lousiana College Wildcats to the Millsaps Softball Complex for a doubleheader.
Millsaps used timely hitting to comeback and win game one 9-8. In the second game
Amber Funderburk turned in an outstanding performance inside the pitcher's circle to complete the doubleheader sweep with a 5-1 win.
Game 1
The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Majors quickly answered back.
Millsaps plated a run in the bottom of the 1st, and then tied the game at 2-2 on a
Mattie Taliaferro sacrifice fly in the 2nd.
The Majors grabbed their first lead of the game when
Lindsey Osbon singled to bring home
Jordan Lipari in the bottom of the 3rd.
Unfortunately, Louisana College responded with three runs in the top of the 4th inning to retake the lead.
In the bottom half of the inning the Millaps offense scored 4 runs on 4 hits to grab a lead that they would not relinquish.
Leslie Norris,
Ty Bergeron and Osbon all had RBIs in the inning to help give the Majors a 7-5 advantage.
The Wildcats fought back to tie the game in their half of the 5th inning, but a
Katelyn Norse RBI double in the bottom half put Millsaps back up 8-7.
Magen Authement's RBI single in the bottom of the 6th gave the Majors a much-needed insurance run.
LC plated one run in the top of the 7th, but
Hayleigh Rogers was able to end the game on a strikeout to secure her first win of the season.
Key Contributors
Norris paced the offense with 3 hits, while Bergeron and Osbon each had a pair of RBIs.
Game 2
After Funderburk worked around a lead off single to keep the Wildcats off the board in the top of the 1st, the Millsaps offense immediately went to work in the bottom half.
Lipari singled to bring home
Kendall Carder, and later in the inning
Karlie Galloway brought home both Lipari and Bergeron to give the Majors an early 3-0 lead.
Louisiana College was finally able to get on the scoreboard in the 4th inning, but the Majors quickly answered back in their half of the inning.
Again it was a Lipari single, this time allowing Norris and Norse to score to put Millsaps ahead 5-1.
That would be all the run support Funderburk needed as she went the distance in the circle scattering 6 hits and allowing just the 1 earned run.
Key Contributors
Norse finished with three hits, while Lipari totaled in 3 RBIs on two base hits.
