JACKSON, Miss. -- After a pair of close losses on the road last weekend, the Millsaps College women's basketball team rebounded in a big way on Friday night. The Majors used a massive third quarter to take down the Rhodes College Lynx 62-61.
The victory pushes Millsaps to 10-13 overall and 4-8 in conference play. The Lynx drop to 13-9 overall. They now hold an 8-4 league mark.Â
How It Happened
Taelor Manning opened up the scoring with a layup, and the Majors continued to lead as the teams traded baskets for the early portion of the first quarter.
However, Rhodes took their first lead of the game at 10-8 with 5:09 remaining in the quarter, and stretched their advantage out to 18-12 by the end of the period.Â
Millsaps, helped in part by three crucial three-pointers, outscored Rhodes in the second quarter, but the Lynx still held a 31-27 lead at halftime.
The third quarter was absolutely dominated by the Majors.Â
They opened up on a 6-0 run, recapturing the lead for the first time since the first quarter on a
Devan Caldwell jump shot.Â
The teams exchanged baskets for a few possessions, but when
Dia Fortenberry put Millsaps up 37-35 with 4:12 left to play in the quarter the Majors never trailed again for the remainder of the game.Â
They went on to outscore Rhodes 12-2 over those next 4:12. All told Millsaps held the Lynx to just 9% shooting from the field in the quarter to carry a 49-37 lead into the final 10Â minutes of play.Â
Rhodes fought back in a big way in the fourth, cutting the Majors' lead down to 4 points with 3:40 still left to play in the game, however, it took 5 quick points inside the final 30 seconds for the Lynx to tie the game up at 61-61.Â
After a Millsaps turnover, the Majors' defense forced a stop and Fortenberry was fouled on the defensive rebound with less than 2 seconds remaining on the clock.Â
She calmly converted on the first of two free throws to give Millsaps the 62-61 win.
