JACKSON, Miss. -- On Sunday, the Millsaps College baseball team pushed their winning streak to three games in a row with a 17-3, run-rule victory over the Southwestern University Pirates.
The Majors broke the game open with 11 runs in the bottom of hte 3rd inning, and added to that advantage the rest of the way to polish off the victory.
The win evens up the Millsaps record at 5-5 overall.
How It Happened
After a pair of scoreless innings on both sides to start off the ballgame, the Majors captured all of the momentum in the bottom of the 3rd inning.
Nathan Chilton led off the inning with a hit by pitch.
Chris Hart and
Sam Pitre both walked to load the bases.
Jimmy Johnstone came through with a RBI single to give Millsaps a 1-0 lead.
Fritz Walker III followed with a walk to make it 2-0. After an out,
Jon Dale Dieckman watched four straight pitches miss the zone to make it 3-0 in favor of the Majors.
Mason Little doubled over the left fielders head scoring both Johnstone and Walker to put Millsaps up 5-0.
In the very next at bat,
Mark Petkovsek really broke the game open with a single up the middle to bring home Diekcman and Little. The Majors drew five more base on balls in the inning, leading to three more runs.
Avery Brock capped off the scoring with a sacrifice fly to plate Pitre.
All told, Millsaps sent 16 men to the plate in the inning. The Majors scored 11 runs, but needed just three hits to do so as they drew nine walks.
The Pirates finally broke through for a pair of runs in the 5th, but Millaps quickly got them back in the bottom half of the inning.
Pitre and Johnstone hit back-to-back singles, and Walker brought both of them in to score on a double down the left field line.
Southwestern scored again in the top of the 6th, but the Majors ended their slim hopes of a comeback with four runs of their own that inning.
The bottom of the 6th saw Dieckman bring in a pair of runs on a single. Millsaps also scored via another bases loaded walk and a wild pitch.
Fisher Moore, who had relieved
Langston Haden in the 6th inning, worked around a leadoff walk in the 7th to retire the side and close out the 17-3, run-rule win.
Key Contributors
Eight different players had at least one RBI for the Majors, but it was Walker who led the way with four. Dieckman added three to push his season total out to a team-leading 13.
On the mound, Haden worked 5.2 innings. He allowed just three earned runs and struck out four batters en route to his first win of the season.
