Offense Shines in Pair of Run Rule Victories for Softball

CLERMONT, Fla. — On Saturday, the Millsaps College softball team opened up their annual spring break trip by picking up a pair of run rule victories.

The Majors scored nine runs in the the first two innings, and limited Washington & Jefferson College to just one hit to score a 10-0 win in the first game.

In the second game, Millsaps scored 16 runs on 18 hits to pull away from Penn State Behrend 16-5.

Millsaps is now 10-6 overall on the season.

Game 1 vs Washington & Jefferson College
Amber Funderburk got the start in the circle, and retired W&J in order in the top of the 1st inning. The offense got things going early as the Majors took advantage of a pair of W&J miscues in the bottom half to plate four runs.

After another three-up, three-down inning from Funderburk in the second, Millsaps broke things wide open in the bottom of the 2nd.

Consecutive singles by Leslie Norris, Kendall Carder and Lindsey Osbon loaded the bases. Ty Bergeron hit a two-RBI single, Brooklyn Wascom brought in a run on a sacrifice fly, and Karlie Galloway smoked a 2-RBI double to give Millsaps a 9-0 lead.

The Majors added another insurance run in their half of the 3rd on a Bergeron double.

W&J's lone hit of the game came on a two-out single in the top of the 4th, but they never really threatened any scoring as Funderburk immediately ended the inning with a strikeout.

She worked around a walk in the top of the 5th to close out the 10-0 win. She finished with six strikeouts, and allowed just the two base runners all game.

Game 2 vs Penn State Behrend
The offensive fireworks continued early and often in the nightcap.

A RBI triple from Osbon, and a two-RBI double from Emily Cook had Millsaps ahead 3-0 after the top of the 1st inning.

After Hannah Derouen pitched a perfect bottom half of the inning, the offense went right back to work.

Carder, Osbon and Bergeron all hit run-scoring doubles in the top of the 2nd to push the Majors' advantage out to 6-0.

Derouen worked around a leadoff walk in the bottom half, and the offfense came through with four more runs in the 3rd to really put the game out of reach.

Millsaps got one run from a Behrend error, and added three more on singles by Gia Zeringue and and Cook.

PSU-B broke through for a pair of runs in their half of the 3rd, but the Majors were able to limit the damage.

In the 4th, Millsaps got both of those runs back and added one more to their total to move ahead 13-2. All three runs came via a homerun by Bergeron.

PSU-B responded with a three-spot of their own in the bottom of the 4th, but the Majors had an answer in the 5th.

Cook, Mackenzie Fleming and Osbon each had RBIs to give Millsaps the 16-5 lead that would hold for the final score.
