JACKSON, Miss – The Millsaps College football team (1-4, 1-1 SAA) was defeated by the Berry College Vikings (3-2, 1-1 SAA), 49-21 on Homecoming on Saturday. Junior wide receiver
Moïse Tezzo racked up three new career highs with eight catches, 122 yards, and two touchdowns at Harper Davis Field.
Junior running back
Montreal Felix led the Majors on the ground with 50 rushing yards while freshman running back
Byron Phillips scored on a one-yard plunge.
Freshman linebacker
Brian Patterson had the best game of his young career with a career-high 11 tackles, one sack and one tackle for loss.
Freshman punter
Ethan Klapatch punted the ball exceptionally well, averaging 45.3 yards per attempt on nine kicks. He totaled 408 net yards with four of his punts travelling over 50 yards.
Berry outgained the Majors 614-307. They also tallied 459 yards rushing on 9.4 yards per carry.
The Majors got off to a blazing start when reigning SAA Offensive Player of the Week and junior quarterback
Kaleb Thompson found Tezzo streaking down the middle of the field on the third play of the game to take a 7-0 lead with a 63-yard passing play.
Berry responded quickly with a 68-yard rushing score on their first offensive play from scrimmage to tie the game.
After getting a stop, Berry would claim their first lead of the game off a 64-yard pitch-and-catch where the receiver made two defenders miss in space with 9:19 remaining in the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Millsaps would tie the game after another beautiful throw from Thompson found Tezzo on a toe-dragging catch in the endzone to cap off a 13-play 62-yard drive.
Berry would ultimately score 35 unanswered points to break away from the Majors.
Showing grit all the way until the end, Millsaps would capitalize on a forced fumble on a Klaypatch punt that the Majors recovered on the one-yard line with just over six minutes remaining. Phillips would then surge up the middle for the final score of the game, cutting the deficit to 49-21.
Senior offensive lineman and the Juan Joseph Memorial Award recipient
Walter Johnson was named Homecoming King.
Millsaps will next travel to San Antonio, Texas to face Trinity University in a SAA conference battle on Saturday, Oct. 16. Kick off will begin at 1 p.m. CT. Football season tickets, which includes the remaining three scheduled home games, may be purchased
