COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A mountainous comeback effort came up just short for the Millsaps men's basketball team as the Majors fell to Colorado College, 61-53 on Saturday.
The Majors took the lead following an 18-point deficit late but couldn't hold on inside Reid Arena at 6,035-feet elevation.
Freshman forward
Drew Roth posted a career-high 12 points, while sophomore wing
Cameron Williams tallied eight points and 12 rebounds.
Millsaps (2-7) controlled the paint with a 22-14 points advantage in a game that featured two ties and four lead changes.
Both teams locked the opposition down, but Colorado College (2-5) held a slight edge in field goal percentage (33.3-26.7).
The Tigers roared out of the gates with a 32-14 advantage to begin the contest. A Roth layup response initiated a 9-1 run to close the half for the Majors and cut into the 18-point hole.
Millsaps, down by as many as 14 points in the second half, began its comeback push with a pair of Williams free throw makes with 14 minutes remaining. The two points springboarded an 18-3 rally to take a 47-46 advantage with 5:22 left to play.
After the Tigers regained the lead, a couple Roth free throws gave Millsaps a 49-48 edge with 4:41 to play. However, this would be the last lead the Majors would hold as Colorado College ended the game with a 13-4 flurry to secure a 61-53 win.
Millsaps will return to action with its first of two exhibition contests in December at NCAA Division I foes. The Majors face Alabama-Birmingham on the road on Tuesday, Dec. 12, beginning at 2 p.m. Live stats will be available at gomajors.com, while live video will be available through CUSA.TV.
