JACKSON, Miss. – A prolonged winter storm across Central Mississippi and the South as well as poor conditions on the Millsaps College campus have led to the cancelation of all home events for the weekend of Feb. 19-21, the athletic department announced on Thursday.
Home teams and schedules impacted by the weather include baseball, softball, volleyball and women's soccer. Affected road teams and schedules include football, men's and women's swimming and diving, and women's basketball.
BASEBALL
The Millsaps baseball program was scheduled to host Rhodes College for a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. Heavy snow accumulations in Memphis and icy conditions in Jackson forced the teams to find neutral-site accommodations. The teams will now play Sunday and Monday at the Hoover Met Complex in Alabama. Sunday will feature a doubleheader at 12 and 3 p.m. Times for Monday's games will be 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
SOFTBALL
Millsaps was set to host MUW for a softball doubleheader, Feb. 20-21, but that series has been canceled. Additionally, a Thursday home doubleheader against Belhaven was postponed earlier in the week.
VOLLEYBALL
The Majors were also ready to welcome the MUW volleyball program into the Hangar Dome on Friday. However, that match has been canceled.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
The Millsaps women's soccer program was slated to kick off its season with LSU-Shreveport on Saturday night, but that match is canceled as well.
On Thursday, the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) announced changes to conference's remaining spring football schedules as well as the dates for the SAA Swimming and Diving Championships because of weather and COVID-19 protocols and policies.
FOOTBALL
Millsaps football will now travel to face Austin College on March 6, with the kickoff time to be announced. The entire conference will be off Feb. 20 and the Majors will also be idle on Feb. 27. Originally, Millsaps was scheduled to play at Austin College on Feb. 20 and at Hendrix College the following week.
The Majors will also travel to Little Rock for the SAA Championship Day on March 13. The opponent and time for that matchup will be announced following the regular season.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
The conference revealed a second change to the dates of the 2021 SAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday because of inclement weather. An updated meet for both the Millsaps men's and women's swimming and diving programs will take place Saturday, Feb. 20 through Monday, Feb. 22 at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Weather forced the No. 8 women's basketball team to push back its two-game series at No. 4 Oglethorpe to Saturday and Sunday. Tip-off times will be 5 p.m. CT and 12 p.m., respectively.
