HOOVER, Ala. – Inclement winter weather forced the Millsaps baseball team to move its four-game home series with Rhodes College to the Hoover Met Complex in Alabama. The Majors were bested by the Lynx, 14-5 and 13-9 in Sunday's doubleheader.
GAME ONE RECAP
Reigning SAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Wil Wood got through the first two innings unscathed to open Sunday, but Rhodes would eventually prevail, 14-5. The Lynx got to Wood in the third by tallying three runs to open the scoring.
Millsaps would answer in the fourth following a leadoff triple by sophomore
Sam Pitre. Teammate
Mason Little would provide a sacrifice fly to left field to score Pitre and cut the deficit to 3-1. Little would finish the game with three RBIs.
The rally was short-lived as Rhodes would tack on seven runs in the fifth to take a commanding 10-1 advantage.
Millsaps answered right back in the bottom half of the fifth. Junior
Chris Hart batted in graduate student
Jon Dale Dieckman with a single past third base. Little would add another pair of RBIs with a left field single scoring Hart and senior
Alan Merkle.
Rhodes would score three more runs in the sixth and add another in the eighth to extend its lead to 14-4. Millsaps would add its final run in the latter part of the inning when freshman
David Abbadessa singled home junior
Avery Brock.
GAME TWO RECAP
The second game of the day was a back-and-forth affair that saw both teams control momentum at various points. Hart powered the Majors with a home run and a run scored in the 13-9 defeat. Brock added an RBI, a pair of runs and two doubles.
Millsaps (1-3, 1-3 SAA) would open the scoring in the first with Hart's leadoff homer to give the Majors their first lead of the day. Rhodes (2-0, 2-0 SAA) would recover with three runs in the top of the second.
The momentum would swing back in Millsaps' favor in the bottom half of the second, however. Sophomore
Mark Petkovsek would reach base after getting struck by a pitch and then sent to third on a Brock double. A passed ball and wild pitch would score both runners in the inning to tie the game at 3-3.
Like a good heavyweight boxing match, Rhodes would fire back with a four-run fifth inning to regain the advantage at 7-3.
However, Millsaps threw their best counter punch to battle back in the game. The Majors would score four runs over their next three innings to even the game at 7-7.
Little plated home
Dylan McFarland in the fifth, Brock doubled home
Joshua Laurent in the sixth and then reached home himself on a wild pitch. Dieckman tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI up the middle to score Little from second.
Rhodes would deliver the knockout punch in the top of the eighth with six runs. The Majors would attempt to claw back once more, but could only tally two final runs in the bottom of the ninth.
