JACKSON, Miss. – Inclement weather forced the Millsaps baseball team (2-8, 2-8 SAA) to move their scheduled home games against Berry College (10-2, 5-2 SAA) to Smith-Wills Stadium. The Majors fell in four games to the Vikings on Saturday (4-2, 20-7) and Sunday (15-4, 10-7).
GAME ONE: 4-2
Senior catcher
Fritz Walker got the scoring started in the opening inning of the weekend with an infield RBI that scored junior third baseman
Chris Hart. A solo home run by
Avery Brock in the bottom of the second inning gave the Majors a 2-0 advantage.
Pitcher
Wil Wood started the game for the Majors and only allowed four hits and three runs in six innings of work.
The Vikings would methodically claw their back into the game by scoring a run in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh inning.
GAME TWO: 20-7 (7 innings)
A quick three runs in the top of the first inning set the tone for the Vikings in a Game Two. Millsaps would cut into the deficit in the bottom of the opening frame courtesy of a
Sam Pitre RBI single.
Pitre shined for the Majors with four hits, including a triple, and three RBIs. Outfielder
Jack Petkovsek also did damage for the Majors offensively, tallying a two-run homer.
Berry would score the next seven runs until the Majors answered in the fourth. Petkovsek would connect on his first career homer, scoring two Majors to cut the deficit to 10-4. Pitre would then triple and be plated home by
Case Page.
The Vikings would add 11 runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Freshman pitcher
Austin Masse allowed zero runs in 2.2 innings pitched for the Majors to close out the game.
GAME THREE: 15-4 (8 innings)
Berry jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first two innings to begin Saturday. Millsaps would crack the scoreboard in the latter half of the second with an
Alan Merkle RBI. Brock would then provide an RBI single in the following frame to pull the Majors within 4-2.
Much like Game Two, the Vikings found momentum and would not relent. Berry would score the next nine runs combined in innings five, six and seven.
Millsaps would add two runs in their half of the seventh on a Pitre RBI double and a wild pitch would score
Mason Little from third.
Berry would answer with two runs in the eighth to induce the 10-run mercy rule.
GAME FOUR: 10-7 (7 innings)
The final game of the weekend would provide back-and-forth excitement and late-game rainy conditions.
Millsaps looked to be in prime position early with a five-run first inning. The action was started by a
Case Page double, which scored Hart.
Walker would then provide an electric double to center field that would clear the bases and plate three RBIs.
David Abbadessa scored Walker on the very next at-bat with a single up the middle.
Berry continued its habit of tallying big innings when the Vikings responded with six runs in the top of the second.
After Abbadessa reached on a throwing error in the third, Hart found a hole down the right field line to score his teammate and tie the game at 6-6.
The Vikings would then add four runs over the following three innings to take a 10-6 edge.
Pitre supplied an answer with a thunderous home run to left center in the sixth. Rain would dominate the final two innings, but the seven-inning contest was able to conclude with two brief delays.
Merkle supplied a leadoff hit in the seventh, but the next Majors were retired in order.
The Majors next travel to face the same Berry squad in Georgia for another four-game series, March 6-7. Both days will feature doubleheaders beginning at 11 a.m. Live video and stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
