Softball Claims Three Victories at Centre Over the Weekend

Majors Use Strong Pitching and Hitting to Win Three-of Four Games

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Millsaps softball team continued its early season success in Southern Athletic Association play after it picked up three wins in a four-game set at Centre over the weekend.

Millsaps (8-5, 6-2 SAA) dropped the first game 10-1, but responded with 3-2, 8-1 and 8-0 victories against the Colonels (1-11, 1-6 SAA).

GAME ONE – 1-10 (5 inn.)
Junior Ty Bergeron put the Majors out front 1-0 in the opening inning with an RBI, but Centre would post 10 runs over the second through fourth frames. The opponents would end the game early in five innings via the run-rule on Saturday.

GAME TWO – 3-2 (10 inn.)
Millsaps responded in the second game of the day with a nail-biting, 3-2 victory that stretched into 10 innings. Senior Karley Williams pitched a gem and every inning, while yielding 11 hits, no walks and surrendering only two runs.

Centre would open the scoring with a run in the third. Millsaps would respond in the sixth to eventually send the game into extra innings.

Junior Kat Reeves opened the inning with a single. Teammate Lindsey Osbon would then advance Reeves to third with a double. Bergeron would step up to the plate with one out and score Reeves with a sacrifice fly to tie the contest at 1-1.

The teams would remain deadlocked into the 10th where runners would begin the inning placed on second base. Senior Jordan Lipari would do the honors for the Majors and instantly advanced to third on a Leslie Norris ground out.

An error by the Centre third baseman would allow Reeves to reach first successfully and score Lipari to give the Majors a 2-1 edge.

Reeves would then steal second base and singled home by Osbon for Millsaps' third run. The Colonels would add a run of their own in the bottom of the 10th, but Williams would shut the door on any further comeback attempt.

GAME THREE – 8-1
The Majors score early and often Sunday, beginning with an 8-1 win in game one and the third game of the series. Senior Hayleigh Rogers pitched seven complete innings, striking out three batters, while allowing one run, five hits and one walk.

Both Molli Perry scored two runs, and both her and Lipari posted a pair of RBIs and two hits. Mattie Taliaferro and Savanah Stafford both scored twice and finished 3-for-4 at the dish.

Millsaps jumped out to a 2-0 lead through the first two innings thanks to a Brooklyn Wascom single and Norris double.

Lipari would then add a double of her own in the third to score Stafford and Taliaferro to push the Major advantage to 4-0.

Centre would score their only run in the fourth before Perry would triple in the fifth to plate two more tallies for Millsaps. A Reeves ground out and Osbon triple would provide the final two scores of the game.

GAME FOUR – 8-0 (5 inn.)
Millsaps would continue to dominate in the second game of the day and earn its third win of the weekend with an 8-0 decision (5 innings).

Sophomore Hannah Derouen pitched the shutout, striking out six batters against four hits and one walk. Five Major batters had two hits and Perry, Osbon and junior Emily Cook posted two RBIs.

Millsaps scored in each of the five innings to put the run-rule into play. Like the first game on Sunday, the Majors grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first, courtesy of a Cook double.

Perry and Osbon would add three runs combined in the second with a pair of singles. With the bases loaded in the third inning, Perry would reach on an error to score Amber Clark. Reeves would then draw a walk to grow the Major advantage to 6-0.

Cook would then post an RBI single in the fourth and a Clark walk with the bases loaded would allow the lead to grow to eight.

The Majors welcome in Rhodes to the Millsaps Softball Complex for a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, March 20-21. Both days begin at 12 p.m. and can be live streamed with live stats at gomajors.com.
