JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps softball team (10-5, 7-1 SAA) downed Rhodes College (6-11, 0-5 SAA) in a doubleheader at the Millsaps College Softball Complex on Saturday. Pitchers
Hannah Derouen and
Karley Williams both recorded complete-game wins for the Majors.
GAME 1: 8-0 (6 innings)
Dominant defense and live bats from the Majors were enough to hold off the Lynx in game one, 8-0 in six innings.
Sophomore
Hannah Derouen finished her complete-game stat line with five strikeouts and only five hits against.
Her most impressive inning was in the fifth when after allowing a pair of singles, she recorded three straight outs leaving both runners stranded.
The Majors lone run in the first inning came from a
Ty Bergeron RBI single to left field that scored
Kat Reeves.
Millsaps was able to score two more runs in the bottom of the second inning off errors from the Lynx.
Mattie Taliaferro then scored off another error from Rhodes to push the Major advantage to 4-0.
Former SAA Softball Player of the Week
Lindsey Osbon continued her dominant season as she recorded a two-RBI double to start off a four-run inning that grew the lead to 8-0. Ultimately, this prompted the run-rule to go into effect.
GAME 2: 9-7
After allowing five runs in the first inning, Williams responded resiliently in the circle. She only gave up two runs in the last six innings, while striking out four batters.
A total of five batters had multiple hits for the Majors, including
Amber Clark with three, and
Jordan Lipari,
Molli Perry,
Kat Reeves and
Savanah Stafford all registered two.
Chipping away at the lead, the Majors retaliated in the second inning with two runs of their own. A Perry RBI double and a Reeves RBI single cut the lead to 5-2.
The Lynx added two runs in the third, but the comeback continued as Millsaps drove in two runs in the bottom of the third inning with two outs. Stafford and Lipari cut the Majors deficit to three at 7-4 with a pair of RBI singles.
The bats of the Majors overwhelmed the Lynx in the bottom of the fifth inning with five runs to complete their comeback. A double to right field by Osbon plated two runners to begin the scoring and cut the lead down to one.
A ground out from Clark was enough to record another RBI and tie the game up at 7-7 as Osbon was able to race across home plate. The go-ahead run for Millsaps came from a wild pitch that scored junior infielder
Emily Cook. Another RBI-single from
Jordan Lipari finished the scoring for both teams and added insurance to the Majors' 9-7 lead.
A duo of Lynx runners successful reached in the seventh, but Williams was able to shut the door on any late-inning rally.
