HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Millsaps men's and women's track and field programs were red hot on a windy and cold day at the Carey Outdoor Challenge on Friday. A trio of Majors posted event wins at the William Carey University Track & Field Complex.
Sophomore
Landry Lemoine defeated 11 other competitors in the 5000-meter run in a blistering time of 15:52.8 for his first collegiate win.
High school teammate
William Weber secured his first win as a Major in the pole vault, clearing 4.00m. Both Lemoine and Weber attended Saint Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis.
Freshman
Patrick Elliott garnered his first victory in just his second college meet. He crossed the 1500-meter line in 4:07.65, nearly three seconds ahead of the nearest challenger.
Joining Elliott in the 1500 was senior
Samuel Saia of Jackson. Saia posted a solid sixth-place finish in the 28-runner field with a time of 4:18.93.
Elliott and Saia also cracked the top 10 in the 800m in fourth (2:01.26) and sixth (2:03.70), respectively.
Junior
Storm Buescher had another solid showing in the high jump. Buescher finished third overall with a height of 1.93m. Additionally, freshman
Jakob Myers-Heldt ended the meet in eighth after throwing his javelin 37.89m.
On the women's side, junior
Rose Ward set a personal record in the hammer with a throw of 40.32m at the Rhodes Invitational in Memphis.
The distance squad also tallied top-10 performances at the Carey Outdoor Challenge. In the 1500-meter run, junior
Isabel Baird finished sixth in 5:24.51.
Teammates
Lily Pudlick,
Abby Tew and
Katie Williams battled the wind in the 5000. Publick (fourth, 21:16.77) led Tew (seventh, 22:08.95) and Williams (ninth, 23:06.19).
The Majors will embark to Birmingham, Ala. to compete in the Hilltop Classic on Friday, March 26.
