DANVILLE, Ky. – The Millsaps baseball team (5-15, 3-7 SAA) lost both games to Centre College (10-9, 7-7 SAA) in the doubleheader on Saturday at Farris Stadium, 4-3 and 8-7.
GAME ONE: 3-4
Sophomore ace
Wil Wood had a strong outing for the Majors with eight strikeouts, one walk, and three earned runs in seven innings in a 4-3 defeat.
Senior catcher
Fritz Walker hit his first homerun of the season in the second inning.
Sam Pitre had an excellent day at the plate going 4-for-5 and scored a run.
Alan Merkle and
Mark Petkovsek both had two hits to open the series.
Centre struck first with an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning.
The Majors would respond in the second with a solo home run from Walker. A two-RBI double from
Mason Little to centerfield would push Pitre and Merkle across home plate for a 3-1 lead in the third inning.
After two scoreless innings from both teams, the Colonels would tie the game at 3-3 with a two-run home run in the sixth.
A walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Centre the lead for good and a 4-3 win.
GAME TWO: 7-8 (7 innings)
Millsaps jumped out to a 7-1 lead by the third inning, but could not hold on in game two and fell 8-7.
Avery Brock had a game-high four RBIs, while
Chris Hart scored two runs. Little added two hits and one RBI for the Majors.
Millsaps used five pitchers in the seven-inning contest.
Scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, the Majors got off to a blazing start.
Walker once again got the scoring started for Millsaps after being walked with the bases loaded. Pitre then scored off an error by the Colonel third baseman. Little ended the 3-0 inning after reaching home on a fielder's choice.
Centre retaliated with an RBI double to end the first and cut the advantage to 3-1.
A sacrifice fly from Little was deep enough in the outfield to plate another runner in the second as
Chris Hart scored to give Millsaps a 4-1 advantage.
Adding insurance to their lead, a two-RBI double from Brock scored Petkovsek and
Will Neely for a 6-1 lead in the top of the third. The Majors were able to reward Brock for his hit as a single to left field from Merkle allowed Brock to round the bases for a 7-1 advantage.
Centre answered the Majors' scoring run with seven runs of their own in the third and fourth inning combined to go ahead, 8-7.
The Colonels would hold Millsaps scoreless in the final three frames.
