DANVILLE, Ky. – The Millsaps baseball team (6-16, 4-8 SAA) split two games with Centre College (11-10, 8-8 SAA) in a Sunday doubleheader at Gary Wright Field.
Game One: 1-9 (7 innings)
Sophomore outfielder
Sam Pitre showed grit as he went 2-for-2 and drew a walk for the Majors in game one.
Fellow sophomore pitcher
Braden Robinson had a solid day on the mound with three strikeouts and zero earned runs allowed in 2.2 innings pitched in relief.
Six errors and 10 players left on base played a key role in the Majors' struggles in game one.
Centre struck first with three unearned runs in the opening inning.
The Majors scored their lone run in the top of the second when
Mason Little was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. This would score sophomore infielder
Dylan McFarland to cut the Colonels lead to 3-1.
Centre would give themselves more insurance in the bottom of the fourth by scoring six runs for a 9-1 advantage.
Neither team would score again as the Colonels would claim game one.
Game Two: 12-5
Pitchers
Taylor Sullivan and
Ryan Erwin gave exceptional efforts on the mound for the Majors in game two. They combined for 11 strikeouts while Erwin surrendered no runs in the final 4.2 innings of the 12-5 victory.
Junior infielder
Chris Hart tallied three RBIs, scored twice and recorded three hits.
Case Page and
Alan Merkle posted two RBIs each. Pitre tallied up two hits and two stolen bases as well.
Centre got the scoring started with a 1-0 lead in the bottom off the first.
After a scoreless second inning, the Majors found life in the form of a two-RBI double down the right field line from Hart that scored Merkle and
Will Neely to give the Majors their first lead of the day. Another RBI from Little allowed Hart to round the bases and give the Majors a 3-1 advantage.
The Colonels showed resilience in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring four runs to regain the advantage at 5-3. Not to be outdone, the Majors showed dominance offensively and defensively from this point on.
The top of the sixth proved fruitful for Millsaps as the team tallied an impressive eight runs. Pitre was able to cut the lead down to 5-4 off an error. A single past the shortstop by
Mark Petkovsek Jr. allowed Little to pace across home plate to tie the game.
Later in the inning, Page and Hart would both bat two-RBI doubles down the right field line to give the Majors a 9-5 lead. RBI singles from Hart and Pitre would then give Millsaps a six-run cushion at 11-5.
The Majors would add one more insurance run when
Nathan Chilton stole home in the seventh.
