BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Tough pitching and timely defense was enough to stop the Millsaps softball team's (12-12, 9-6 SAA) attempt at a series victory at No. 6 Birmingham-Southern (25-4, 12-2 SAA). The Panthers bested the Majors, 3-0 at the BSC Softball Park on Sunday.
Senior pitcher
Hayleigh Rogers went 4.0 innings, yielding two earned runs against eight hits. Junior
Cassidy Thrash surrendered just one hit and no runs in 2.0 innings of relief.
Fellow upperclassman and senior
Jordan Lipari had a 2-for-3 day, while
Lindsey Osbon and
Magen Authement recorded hits for the Majors.
Millsaps looked poised to take an early lead when Lipari began the third inning with a lead-off double and advancement to third on a wild pitch. Two outs later,
Molli Perry would walk and steal the newly vacated second base, but the Majors were unable to capitalize.
BSC would finally break through in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded and one out. Millsaps would record the second out with a Rogers force out at home, but the Panthers would score with the very next at-bat due to catcher's inference.
The Panthers would add two more runs to extend their advantage to 3-0 in the fifth inning. BSC would open the inning with three hits, but Thrash entered to record the next three outs to limit any further damage.
Authement would single in the sixth and Lipari would single in the seventh, but BSC shut the door on both comeback attempts.
The Majors will now enter the SAA Softball Tournament as the No. 3 seed in a double-elimination format. They will face No. 2 seed Berry on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. CT. Live stats and video links will be available at gomajors.com.
