Southern Athletic Association Announces Updated COVID-19 Policies for 2021-22 Season

ATLANTA – The Southern Athletic Association's Council of Presidents has established the following COVID-19 policies for the start of the 2021-22 athletic season. The Conference office and SAA leadership will continue to monitor developments related to COVID-19. All policies are subject to change as warranted.

Conference members have agreed to adhere to the testing, quarantine, and isolation provisions recommended in the NCAA's latest Resocialization of Collegiate Sport recommendations (released August 4, 2021).

Consistent with that guidance are the following provisions for student-athletes and other Tier 1 individuals.
  1. Fully vaccinated student-athletes (or those with documented infection and recovery in the last 90 days) will not require testing in order to participate, unless symptomatic.
  2. Unvaccinated (or partially vaccinated) student-athletes will be tested three times weekly, if antigen tests are used, or once weekly if using a PCR test, with the timing of tests as specified in the NCAA guidelines.
  3. Unvaccinated (or partially vaccinated) student-athletes who have close contact with a confirmed positive COVID-19 case will quarantine according to public health protocols.
  4. Vaccinated student-athletes do not need to quarantine, but will mask for 14 days in public indoor settings or until a negative COVID-19 test 3-5 days after exposure.
If a team cannot compete in a SAA contest due to COVID-19 related restrictions, then the game will be recorded as a forfeit for that team and will not be rescheduled.

Testing of unvaccinated officials will be managed by the host/home institution according to its COVID-19 policy for Tier 1 individuals.

Spectator policies – including availability, ticketing, seating restrictions, and masking requirements -- will be at the discretion of the host/home institution and publicized clearly and as early as possible on that institution's athletic websites.
