Lynx Escape with Narrow Win over Men’s Basketball on Friday

Sophomore Wing Cameron Williams Marked Game-Highs of 17 Points and Eight Rebounds

JACKSON, Miss. – In their first home game in nearly a month, Millsaps men's basketball fell short in a tightly contested 60-58 loss to the Rhodes Lynx on Friday. Second-year wing Cameron Williams marked game-highs of 17 points and eight rebounds inside the Hangar Dome.

Millsaps (2-11, 0-3 SAA) dominated in bench points (22-13) but shot 12-of-23 from the free throw line. Rhodes (6-8, 1-3 SAA) won the points in the paint battle, 26-22.

The Majors raced out to a 7-0 lead thanks to freshman guard Brock Brown scoring the first five points of the game.

With action waning down in the first half, Brown found his twin brother Bryce Brown streaking down the court to knot the game up at 27-27 heading into the intermission.

Following the under 12-minute media timeout, sophomore center Aaron Ursin would find Williams on a backdoor cut to give Millsaps their first lead after trailing since 12:01 in the first half.

With both teams trading baskets, the Lynx regained the advantage on the scoreboard at 52-51 with just over four minutes left. Following the final media timeout, Williams knocked down a pair of free throws to give Millsaps back the advantage with 3:58 left.

Rhodes would answer with a three-pointer in the corner, but senior forward Newlon GIllihan would put back an offensive rebound and a free-throw to polish off an old-fashion three-point play. The Lynx would once again respond with a bucket to give them a one-point lead with less than two minutes left at 57-56.

After Rhodes split a pair of free throws, the Majors would be down by two with 1:02 left and head coach Michael Prather would call a timeout to draw up a play. Gillihan would miss a hook shot from the wing and Rhodes would preserve a two-point advantage and force the Majors to foul. Rhodes would split the attempts to give Millsaps the opportunity to tie the game with a three-pointer.

A travel call on Williams would give Rhodes the ball with 12 seconds left. The Lynx would bury one of two free throws en route to escaping with a 60-58 victory.

Millsaps will remain at home as they to welcome Hendrix College on Sunday. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start, with live video and stats links found on the men's basketball schedule page at gomajors.com.
