Hendrix Fends off Men’s Basketball, 71-62 on Sunday

Major Quartet Reach Double Figures in Weekend Clash

JACKSON, Miss. – A balanced scoring effort from a quartet of Millsaps men's basketball student-athletes was not enough in a 71-62 loss to Hendrix College in the Hangar Dome on Sunday.

Freshman Bryce Brown (12 points), sophomore Cameron Williams (11 points, six rebounds), junior Doug Watson (10 points, five rebounds) and Newlon Gillihan (10 points, three steals) started for and powered the Majors in defeat.

Millsaps (2-12, 0-4 SAA) shot an efficient 40 percent from three-point range, but was outscored in the paint, 32-20. Although it was a tightly contested game, Hendrix (4-11, 1-0 SAA) led for over 37 minutes.

Efficient offense and points off turnovers boosted Hendrix to a 21-12 lead entering the second media timeout to open the game. After the Warriors' lead grew to as much as 27-12, Millsaps cut the lead back down to 31-27 following a floating jumper from the wing by Williams, punctuating a 15-4 run.

The Warriors knocked down two jump shots to push their lead back up to nine, but Brown would respond with a side-step three before the end of the half to cut deficit to 39-33.

The Majors took control of momentum out of the gates in the second half when a jumper by Gillihan made it one-point game at the first media timeout. Looking for the first lead since 3-2 in the first half, a thunderous block by Williams was converted into free throws to give the Majors the lead again at 40-39 with just over 15 minutes remaining.

With Hendrix up 46-45, a 7-0 run pushed their lead up to eight before Millsaps answered with five straight points of their own. A thunderous dunk by Williams cut the deficit to 53-50. With the action picking up, Hendrix converted on an and-one layup to extend their lead to 61-54 with four minutes left.

After Williams knocked down a pair of free throws from the charity stripe to make it a five-point game, but Hendrix scored on a floater and a jumper to make it a 65-56 game with 57 seconds remaining.

Gillihan would respond quickly with a strong layup, and head coach Michael Prather would call timeout to set up a full-court press down by seven. The Warriors would hold steady at the free throw line and claim a 71-62 victory.

Millsaps will remain at home as they welcome Oglethorpe University next Friday. The game is scheduled for an 8 p.m. start, with live video and stats links found on the men's basketball schedule page at gomajors.com.
