JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's basketball team was upended in an SAA conference matchup against the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels by a score of 82-59. Senior forward Newlon Gillihan was the lone Major to notch double-figure scoring with 10 points inside the Hangar Dome on Friday night.
Millsaps (2-13, 0-5 SAA) received a solid contribution from their bench as the reserves outscored their opponents, 24-23. The Majors also won the battle for second-chance points by a margin of 13-12. Oglethorpe (11-5, 5-1 SAA) converted 22 Majors' turnovers into 36 points and never trailed in the game.
With both teams looking to push the tempo, second-year forward Seth Stephen corralled an offensive rebound off a free throw and put back a vicious dunk to make it a 10-7 deficit. Oglethorpe would respond with a 6-0 spurt entering the 12-minute media timeout.
Oglethorpe would push their run to 21-4 until the Majors would find a rhythm offensively and cut the deficit down to 34-21 after a pull-up jump shot from Gillihan prior to the final media timeout of the half. In the waning minutes of the half, Brock Brown and Doug Watson would connect on consecutive threes to make it an eleven-point game.
Oglethorpe would score six straight points to push their lead back up to 17 points with just over a minute remaining, but Millsaps would respond with an 8-0 burst punctuated with a putback jumper right before half by Gillihan to cut the Stormy Petrels' lead to single digits at 44-35.
Oglethorpe would retake control of the game and extend their advantage to 64-45 heading into the under 12-minute timeout and eventually pull out an 82-59 victory.
