JACKSON, Miss. – Millsaps men's basketball senior forward
Newlon Gillihan posted team-highs of seven points and eight rebounds in a 54-45 battle against (RV) Berry College inside the Hangar Dome on Sunday afternoon.
Millsaps (2-14, 0-6 SAA) won the points off turnover battle against the visitors, 16-4. They also received a generous contribution from their reserves, outscoring the Vikings 23-22 in bench points. Berry (13-2, 4-1 SAA) held the Majors to a season-low 21 percent from the field, including one make from three-point range.
Both teams started cold offensively with Berry holding a 2-0 edge at the first media timeout. Following the break,
Seth Stephens got Millsaps on the board with a put-back layup.
A
Bryce Brown one-man fast break capped off a 10-2 run by the Majors, allowing them to take their only lead of the game at 12-10. The Vikings would then gain traction with a 17-6 response, leading to a 27-18 advantage at the half.
In what was an evenly matched second half through the first 12 minutes, the Majors found themselves down 45-33 with 7:15 remaining. A layup by Brown cut it a 52-44 game with 42 seconds left. This brought Millsaps within single digits for the first time in the second half, but Berry would ultimately hold on for 54-45 win.
