DANVILLE, Ky. – The Millsaps men's basketball team was bested at Centre College, 66-57 inside the Alumni Gymnasium on Sunday. Senior
Newlon Gillihan nearly tallied a double-double with 10 points and a career-best nine rebounds.
Junior guard
Doug Watson was efficient off the bench with 10 points and three rebounds.
Cameron Williams and
Bryce Brown each added eight points for Millsaps (2-10, 0-2 SAA).
Centre (8-6, 2-1 SAA) was held to 36.2 percent from the field (21-52) but made a habit of scoring from the free throw line (22-of-27). The Colonels' RJ Smith exploded for 31 points, accounting for nearly half the Centre total.
After back-and-forth opening minutes,
Cam Rucker sank a three-pointer with 13:14 remaining in the first half to give Millsaps its last lead at 10-9. The Colonels would respond with a 10-0 run, but the Majors would cut the deficit to 31-28 by intermission.
The Majors would continue to scrap, and following a
Nicholas Ughovwa jumper, trail only 36-35 with 16:01 to play in the second. Centre would answer going ahead 44-35 after an 8-0 burst.
Williams would punctuate a 13-6 run and allow the Majors to trail 50-48 with 8:03 to play. Centre pushed back once more and held on for a 66-57 win.
Millsaps returns home to welcome Rhodes College next Friday. The game is scheduled for an 8 p.m. start, with live video and stats links found on the men's basketball schedule page at gomajors.com.
