Millsaps Football Wins Thriller at Sewanee, 30-27

Moïse Tezzo Scores Twice, Special Teams Leads to 17 Points on Saturday

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Millsaps football team used special teams to their advantage by downing Sewanee, 30-27 at Harris Stadium Saturday.

The Majors scored 17 points off turnovers and won their 16th consecutive meeting with the Tigers.

Sophomore quarterback Brody Davis completed 16-of-35 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns. He added 55 yards on the ground.

Senior running back Montreal Felix tallied 16 carries for 78 yards. Classmate wide receiver Moïse Tezzo scored through the air and on the ground by totaling 81 receiving yards and nine rushing yards.

Sophomore wideout Xavion Butler caught five passes for 56 yards and a score, while freshman back Jordan Osborn rushed for 18 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, freshman Nehemiah Coalson and sophomore Thomas Patterson led the Majors with nine and eight tackles, respectively.

Sewanee worked their way down the field on their opening possession, converting a five-play, 99-yard drive for an early 7-0 lead.

On the following Tiger drive, the Majors took advantage of great field possession by forcing a punt fumble. Millsaps started its third possession on the Sewanee 11-yard line courtesy of the miscue.

Osborn later alluded one tackler and rushed up the middle for a four-yard touchdown rush tying the game at 7-7 midway through the first quarter.

The special teams unit of Millsaps again made a huge play by blocking the very next Sewanee punt. Sophomore Jackson Demouy got has hand up for the block and senior Christopher Butler returned the kick 11 yards to the Sewanee 29-yard line putting the Majors in great field position.

Millsaps would score on the very next play when Davis faked a handoff and connected with sophomore Xavion Butler on a 29-yard pass-and-catch putting the Majors up 14-7.

Classmate Ethan Klapatch looked to add to the lead in the final minute, but narrowly missed a 43-yard field goal attempt wide left.

After the teams traded punts for the majority of the second quarter, Tezzo electrified the Millsaps sideline with a 60-yard touchdown catch as he found space and left all would-be tacklers behind. The Majors would claim a 20-7 advantage following a missed PAT.

Sophomore Darren Labit would nearly add a defensive touchdown of his own as he intercepted a pass and returned it 56 yards to close the first half.

Sewanee would cut into the deficit to start the second half following a 70-yard rush. The Tigers would eventually punch it home from two yards out making it a 20-14 contest.

Special teams would come up large yet again when Sewanee muffed a punt return five minutes in the quarter. Senior Thomas Gaffney was the first Major on the loose ball for the recovery, setting Millsaps up deep in Tiger territory on the 18-yard line.

Klapatch would convert a 36-yard field goal try later in the drive, pushing the Major edge to 23-14.

Millsaps would then chew up a huge chunk of game clock beginning midway in the third quarter. The Majors would use seven minutes to march the ball 81 yards down the field in 13 plays. Tezzo finished the drive on an 18-yard rush by breaking five tackles running around the edge, pushing Millsaps ahead 30-14 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Sewanee then scored off a 46-yard rush with 7:20 remaining, but would be stopped on a crucial two-point attempt.

After a Millsaps drive led to a punt, the Tigers scored again with a 66-yard passing touchdown to cut the Major lead to 30-27.

Both defenses would hold the remainder of the game, giving Millsaps the thrilling 30-27 road conference victory.
