Dynamic Passing Attack Propels Majors Past Hendrix, 34-28

Brody Davis Combined for Five Touchdowns, 358 Passing Yards on Saturday

JACKSON, Miss. – Millsaps football sophomore quarterback Brody Davis was terrific as he powered the Majors to a 34-28 victory over Hendrix at Harper Davis Field on Saturday.

Davis totaled five touchdowns and a career-best four passing scores. He added a rushing tally and completed 28-of-37 passes with one interception.

Senior Moïse Tezzo (five catches, 95 receiving yards) and junior D.B. Bennett (three catches, 55 receiving yards) both tallied two scores through the air.

Other offensive playmakers included sophomore Xavion Butler (six catches, 81 yards) and graduate Nic Hayes (six catches, 69 receiving yards, 55 kickoff return yards).

Defensively the Majors combined for a season-high six sacks. Sophomore Thomas Patterson was solid with six tackles, including one sack and forced fumble. Leading the team with seven tackles each were graduate Nick Ojonta and freshman Braylon Wills.

Sophomore kicker/punter Ethan Klapatch was strong in controlling field position, averaging 54.2 yards on six kickoffs and finished 4-of-4 on PATs.

The Millsaps (3-2, 2-0 SAA) defense gave the Majors momentum early when Ojonta forced a sack that pushed Hendrix from the Millsaps 20-yard line to the 30-yard line. The Warrior opening drive then stalled on a failed fourth-down attempt.

Davis then led the Majors on an eight-play, 70-yard march which was finished off by a 38-yard Tezzo touchdown catch.

After forcing a Hendrix (1-4, 0-2 SAA) punt, the Majors made it a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter. Davis found an open Bennett who alluded would-be tacklers for a 34-yard score.

The Warriors responded with a 71-yard pass to cut the deficit to 14-7 on the next possession.

Millsaps answered with a methodical 11-play, 75-yard drive. Davis found Butler for a 38-yard pass-and-catch, which was stopped at the one-yard line. Undeterred, Davis scored from one-yard out on a quarterback option.

Hayes gave the Majors great field possession to start the second half following a 30-yard return. Only seven plays later and Davis found Bennett wide open on a 12-yard completion in the end zone to give Millsaps a 28-7 edge.

On Millsaps' next possession, Hendrix would get back into the game on an interception return that set them up on the Major 30-yard line. A few plays later, the Warriors made it 28-14 on a quarterback rush.

The Majors then opened the fourth quarter with a 25-yard Tezzo touchdown grab to push the lead to 34-14. A bobbled PAT snap led to a failed two-point attempt.

Hendrix wouldn't go down without a battle. The Warriors scored on another quarterback rush following a 12-play, 75-yard drive.

Millsaps would recover an onside kick attempt, but would be stopped again on fourth down, this time inside the Warrior 25-yard marker. Hendrix would work swiftly to score again with 1:35 remaining.

A final onside kick attempt would roll and be recovered by freshman Tondarrius Stallion to seal the Millsaps victory.

The Majors will look to continue its winning streak as it travels to Birmingham-Southern next Saturday, Oct. 15. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
