No. 5 Trinity Gets the Better of Millsaps Football on Senior Day

Majors Honored 16 Football and Cheerleading Student-Athletes Prior to Kickoff

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps football team was downed by No. 5 Trinity University, 53-7 at Harper Davis Field during Senior Day on Saturday.

Freshman quarterback Benny Malin completed five-of-nine passes for 53 yards and a touchdown. He added 35 yards on four carries.

Sophomore wideout Xavion Butler hauled in three catches for 54 yards and a touchdown. The special teams unit featured strong returns with graduate Nic Hayes tallying a 59-yard punt return. Sophomore Jett Coolman totaled 103 yards on five kickoff returns, while senior Christopher Butler grabbed an interception for 26 yards and five tackles.

Coolman added a career-high 10 tackles and three pass breakups. Additionally, sophomore Jackson Demouy totaled career-bests of nine tackles and six solo stops.

The Majors held Trinity to four plays on the game's opening drive and seven points in the opening quarter. However, the Tigers would score on three consecutive possessions and add a safety to make it 26-0 at halftime.

Millsaps looked poised to score before the intermission when Butler returned an interception 26 yards and a pass interference penalty set the Majors up on the Trinity eight-yard line. Three incompletions and a fumbled snap on a field goal try ended the opportunity.

The Majors again held Trinity scoreless on its first possession of the second half. The Tigers would eventually add 13 points in the third and 14 points in the final quarter.

Malin put together a six-play, 72-yard drive in the fourth, which was finished off with a 32-yard touchdown catch to Xavion Butler in the corner of the end zone.

Prior to kickoff, the Majors recognized seniors Christopher Butler, Chris Chandler, TJ Bush, Montreal Felix, Thomas Gaffney, Melvindrick Johnson, Ridge Murphy, Chase Robertson, Nik Shanklin, Josh Smith, Moïse Tezzo and Kaleb Thompson.

Millsaps also celebrated the accomplishments of senior cheerleaders Brianna Blunt, Amiya Lumar, Mary Shank and Xan Wright.

At halftime, Murphy was recognized with the Juan Joseph Memorial Award as well.

Millsaps will conclude the regular season next Saturday at Centre. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. CT and live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
