Cameron Williams (14 points),
Aaron Ursin (11 points, five rebounds) and
Brock Brown (11 points) all reached double figures for the Millsaps men's basketball team in a 69-63 defeat to Rhodes College. Ursin notched a career-high four blocks while freshman
Bryce Brown added a game-high three steals Inside Mallory Gymnasium on Friday afternoon.
Millsaps (4-18, 2-10 SAA) shot an impressive 47.1 percent from the three-point line (8-17) and dominated their opponents in bench points with their reserves outpacing the Lynx, 32-11. Rhodes (10-12, 5-7 SAA) were physical on the glass as they outrebound the Majors 45-21 and almost tripled Millsaps in free throws made at 13-5.
Racing out to a 7-0 lead, the Lynx came out inspired for their Senior Day. As the game calmed down, a three by Williams tied the game at 13-13. A driving layup by sophomore guard
Cam Rucker gave the Majors their first lead to cap off a 6-0 burst with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half.
With time running out and Rhodes nursing a 29-23 lead in the first half, junior guard
Doug Watson found Brown for a three to make their deficit three points heading into the intermission. Coming out of halftime, a jumper by Brown helped Millsaps regain the lead at 33-32 with 17:10 remaining.
With both teams jockeying for an advantage, Rhodes gained ground with back-to-back threes to take a six-point lead with just under eight minutes remaining. Their lead would grow to as much as seven points before Millsaps would come roaring back with an Ursin layup tying the game at 61-61 with 2:20 remaining. Millsaps would then cool off in the final minutes as they only produced one made field goal after Ursin's layup, and Rhodes would hold on for a 69-63 win.
