SHERMAN and TEXARKANA, Texas – The Millsaps softball team claimed two victories on its three-game Texas road trip on Friday and Saturday. Millsaps (3-2) defeated Austin College 9-1 and 13-6 on Friday, while falling to Texas A&M University Texarkana 10-2 on Saturday.
Game One: W, 9-1 (Five Innings)
Pitcher
Cassidy Thrash tossed a one-hit, six strikeout game in what served as a run-rule victory for the Majors.
Centerfielder
Molli Perry led the way in Game One with a game-high three runs, two hits and one RBI. Catcher
Magen Authement also raced across the plate with two runs and was walked a game-high two times. A trio of Majors notched two RBIs each in
Kat Reeves,
Brooklyn Wascom and
Katie Norris.
Norris grounded out into a fielder's choice and Perry scored as both teams traded a run in the first inning. The Majors took control in the second inning when Authement scored on an error and a double to left field by Wascom brought Norris and Perry across the plate for a 4-1 lead.
With momentum on their side, Millsaps added three more runs in the third inning. The Majors' first run of the inning came with a sac fly from Norris to score
Katie Nolen. Later in the inning, Perry singled to center field to bring Authement around the bases. Millsaps would then finish off the inning when a groundout from Reeves would give
Amber Clark enough time to cross home plate.
Wascom scored off a Norris double in the fourth inning while Perry scored again with a Reeves single to give Millsaps a 9-1 advantage. Thrash would continue to dominate and the Majors' defense would hold steady for the game one victory.
Game Two: W, 13-6
Continuing their offensive onslaught from the first game, the Majors tallied a season-high 13 runs. Reeves marked career-highs of five RBIs and two runs. Perry was on fire at the plate as she went a career-best 4-4 and also racked up three runs scored.
Emily Cook had an outstanding outing in game two with three hits and three RBIs. shortstop
Mackenzie Fleming had two hits and was rewarded with two runs, while Wascom had two hits and two RBIs. Rounding out impressive days at the plate in game two was second baseman
Katelyn Norse, who tallied three runs and two RBIs.
Pitchers
Hayleigh Rogers and
Hannah Derouen combined for nine strikeouts in the circle.
After Reeves brought in Perry for the first run of the game, Austin College scored twice to take the first lead of the game at the end of the first inning. The Majors responded valiantly in the top of the second starting when Fleming scored on a fielder's choice. Millsaps would then reclaim he lead with a line drive double to center field from Cook that helped Norris and Reeves round the bases. Millsaps would then go up 5-3 when a double from Wascom batted in Reeves.
In the top of the third, a two-RBI double from Norse scored Nolen and Fleming. Later in the inning, Reeves would make contact with an infield hit that resulted in an error that got Norris and Perry across home plate. Polishing off a strong third inning, a RBI single by Wascom scored Reeves. After a scoreless inning by both teams in the fourth, Millsaps would complete a 10-0 run when Wascom scored on another error by Austin College.
Trying to inch their way back into the game, the Roos scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 11-6 game. Norse and Perry would cross home plate in the top of the sixth and these would prove to be the final runs in a 13-6 game for the Majors to complete the two-game sweep over Austin College.
Game Three: L, 2-10
Alli Nolen,
Emily Cook and
Molli Perry recorded a hit in a 10-2 defeat at Texas A&M University Texarkana on Saturday.
Trailing 1-0 entering the third inning, Cook tallied her first of two RBIs with a double down the left line to tie the game.
Now down 3-1 in the fifth inning, Cook hit a deep sacrifice to center field to score Perry from third.
The Eagles responded with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the run-rule into effect.
Millsaps will return to Jackson to face Belhaven on the road on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. Live stats and video links will be available on the softball schedule page at gomajors.com.
