JACKSON, Miss. – No. 18 Belhaven used one tough, four-run inning to slip by Millsaps softball by a count of 5-0 at Jim McLeod Field on Tuesday.
Sophomore pitcher
Hannah Derouen struck out three batters while allowing three runs on six hits in 3.1 IP. Senior
Hayleigh Rogers limited further damage with one strikeout, two runs against off six hits over 2.1 IP.
Sophomore
Molli Perry tallied a hit, while classmate
Katie Norris and junior
Amber Clark recorded a hit and a walk each.
Kat Reeves reached base in the opening inning after the catcher lost the third strike on a wild pitch. However, Belhaven was able to strike out the side and manage the early threat.
The Majors looked ready to score the opening run the following inning when Megan Authement reached second following a Clark base on balls. A strikeout would end the frame.
Belhaven would then advance a runner to third with one out in the bottom of the second, but Derouen would shut the door with a strikeout and a fly out to center.
Derouen would answer another Blazer opportunity which saw runners on first and second with two outs in the third. She would strike out the next two batters swinging.
Belhaven would finally break through in the fourth with four runs, including a two-run home run. The Majors wouldn't go quietly as they would put runners in scoring position in the fifth, sixth and seventh. Ultimately Millsaps couldn't cash in and Belhaven added an insurance marker in the sixth for a final 5-0 tally.
The Majors will next travel to Montgomery, Ala. for two games against both Mount St. Joseph and Huntingdon, Feb. 26-27. Check gomajors.com for possible live stats and live video links.
