ATLANTA – Marking the 10-year anniversary of the Southern Athletic Association during the 2021-22 seasons, the conference is looking back at the best moments, teams and performances in league history. The SAA recognized Millsaps volleyball's 90-point set during the 2013 SAA Tournament win on Thursday.
On Nov. 8, 2013, the Majors set numerous NCAA records in its 25-15, 46-44, 23-25, 25-14 SAA Tournament quarterfinal victory over Birmingham-Southern in Mount Berry, Ga.
The 90-point second set was the longest in NCAA history regardless of division in the 25-point set era, besting the DI mark of 88 points (Manhattan d. Rider 45-43 in 2009). The second set shattered the old record D-III of 82 points between SUNY Geneseo and Rochester (NY) in 2011. Millsaps broke Rochester's record for most points in a four-set match with 119. Additionally, the Majors tallied the most points ever scored in the 25-point set era with 46.
The NCAA began sponsoring volleyball during the 1981 season, while the 25-point era began in 2008. Many of these records still stand today and it is still an incredible feat between two SAA Tournament teams for not giving up and giving it their all.
Millsaps Head Volleyball Coach Jaime Fisher:
"This match was one of the most stressful, and fun matches I've ever been a part of. We ran out of substitutions in the early 20's so players were playing out of position. We had a small setter playing front row, a defensive specialist playing outside and a rights side playing defense.
This is a match I always reference when I tell teams about what grit looks like. They played every point all out, never doubted themselves and never gave in to the fear of what may or may not happen. They played as a team and for each other. The hardest part of this match was, that was game two, and we hadn't yet won the match. After we did all that and played our minds out … we had to do it all again in sets three and four. Which they did and won!"
