JACKSON, Miss. – Millsaps men's basketball sophomore center
Aaron Ursin marked a career-high 18 points to go along with five rebounds in a 73-60 victory over Sewanee on Friday. Sophomore wing
Cameron Williams tallied his fifth double-double of the season (13 points, 11 rebounds) to go along with a career-high four steals inside the Hangar Dome.
Millsaps (3-16, 1-8 SAA) received major contributions from across the board as four starters accumulated double-digit scoring, with
Newlon Gillihan (17 points) and
Doug Watson (10 points) also reaching the mark.
Sewanee (5-13, 2-7 SAA) was stifled by the Majors' defense as they were held to a season-low seven percent from the three-point line (2-for-26).
Ursin came out of the gates on fire scoring 10 points in the first eight minutes of the contest. The Majors scored 16 of their first 17 points inside the arc as they led Sewanee, 17-16 at the under 12-minute media timeout.
A long-range three by Williams initiated a 13-5 run to give the Majors a 30-21 advantage with 6:08 left in the first half. As action waned down with back-and-forth action, Sewanee inched their way closer to the Majors' lead to make it a three-point game with under a minute left. On the final possession of the first half, the gym exploded as Williams slammed down a powerful put-back dunk as time expired to give Millsaps a 39-34 lead.
Scoring the first eight points of the second half, the Majors gained a double-digit advantage at 47-34. Midway through the second half, the Majors ran their offense beautifully when Williams found Watson coming off a screen for a three-pointer. Watson would then be fouled on the next possession and knocked down a pair of free throws. Ursin would initiate a 7-0 run by putting spinning swiftly past his defender for their largest lead at 60-41.
Trying to claw their way back into the game with full court pressure, Sewanee hit consecutive layups to make it 69-56 with 2:12 left. However, the Tigers could not get the game within single digits as the Majors held on for a 73-60 triumph.
Millsaps will remain at home for Senior Day as they host Centre College on Sunday. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start, with live video and stats links found on the men's basketball schedule page at gomajors.com.
