CLERMONT, Fla. – The Millsaps softball team kept it close, but fell to William Paterson late in the opening matchup for the Majors at THE Spring Games, 8-1 on Saturday. Rain caused two scheduled games to become one with a new opponent hailing from New Jersey.
Cassidy Thrash,
Hannah Derouen and
Delta Claire Newman combined for 11 strikeouts, but the Pioneers broke free for six runs in the seventh inning.
Senior
Brooklyn Wascom tallied a hit and an RBI, while
Molli Perry finished 1-for-1 with a walk, hit by pitch and two stolen bases.
William Paterson struck first for two runs in the third inning. Millsaps would respond in the fifth with a run of their own. A leadup double by
Mackenzie Fleming would turn into a run when Wascom singled her home.
Millsaps looked poised to tie the game when Perry successful reached on a bunt and stole second with Wascom on third. However, a ground out would end the threat. The Pioneers would add six tallies to pull away in the seventh.
The Majors will return Monday to face Carthage College at 2:15 p.m. CT and follow with Meredith College right after in Leesburg, Florida. Video is available through subscription with FloSoftball.
