CLERMONT and LEESBURG, Fla. – The Millsaps softball team earned a win over Smith College, while falling in three other contests to end THE Spring Games in central Florida, Monday and Tuesday.
Monday Recap: Carthage College 5, Millsaps 1
Amber Clark finished 2-for-4, while
Kat Reeves tallied the lone RBI to open Monday in the Sunshine State. The Majors fell behind 3-0 entering the bottom of the first.
Molli Perry would reach on an error by the shortstop and make it to third following a steal. Reeves would ground out but score her teammate to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Majors looked destined to score again as Clark doubled with one out in the second inning. She would be pushed to third with a bunt, but a popup would end the threat.
Millsaps would have a runner at second in scoring position with one or no outs in each of the second, third and fourth innings. Carthage would withstand the test on each occasion and add a run in the fifth and seventh for the 5-1 final tally.
Monday Recap: Meredith College 4, Millsaps 2
Cassidy Thrash finished with three strikeouts against six hits, while allowing zero runs in 4.0 innings of relief.
Offensively, Reeves had another strong game going 2-for-2 with two walks.
Brooklyn Wascom finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and RBI, while
Savanah Stafford tallied an RBI and went 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Avenging Angels would strike first for two runs in the first inning. Millsaps was quick to respond in the second as
Camille Black led off the frame with a double down the left field line. A passed ball and Wascom single would bring Black around for the score.
Stafford would single later in the inning and an error would allow Wascom to tie the game at 2-2. The Majors would put runners on first and second to begin the third, but a pair of strikeouts and popout would end the scoring chance.
Meredith would go ahead, 4-2 in the bottom of the third with a two-run home run. Millsaps would threaten again with the bases loaded with two outs in the fourth, but the Avenging Angels would hold tough yet again.
Millsaps' final chance came in the seventh with two walks and one out. Meredith would strikeout the final three hitters to escape with the 4-2 win.
Tuesday Recap: Millsaps 4, Smith College 2
The Majors were victorious in their opening game on Tuesday, downing Smith College 4-2.
Thrash pitched a gem throwing a complete seven innings, striking out five batters, allowing zero walks, while yielding only one earned run.
Reeves and
Katelyn Norse finished with two hits each and
Mackenzie Fleming added two RBIs.
Katie Norris had an outstanding day hitting 3-for-4, she scored twice and tallied an RBI. Millsaps combined for 11 hits in the contest.
Smith College scored first in the opening frame, but the Majors responded strong in the third. Stafford reached on an error and promptly stole second. With two outs, Norris singled to bring her teammate home. Norris would reach second herself and Wascom would then tally the go-ahead RBI, putting Millsaps up 2-1.
Thrash would strike out the first batter in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the next Pioneer would soon make it to third. An RBI single would then tie the game.
A Norris single would provide the Majors a base runner with one out in the seventh. Wascom would reach on an error which put her and Norris in scoring position. Fleming then provided the crucial two-run RBI single to give Millsaps a 4-2 lead.
A double play would end the game in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the Major victory.
Tuesday Recap: North Park 6, Millsaps 0
Delta Claire Newman pitched a complete game and struck out four batters, gave up no walks and allowed four earned runs. A total of seven different Majors recorded one hit, but none were able to score in a 6-0 defeat.
North Park scored four runs in the opening inning to put the Majors in an early hole. Millsaps would put the first two batters on base in the bottom of the first and second, but were kept off the board both times.
The Vikings would respond with two more runs in the third to push their advantage to six and hold on for a 6-0 victory.
The Majors travel back to Jackson to host a three-game set with Birmingham-Southern. Game one of the three-game series begins at 12 p.m. on Saturday. Live stats and video will be available for each contest at gomajors.com.
